New York and Florida have their primaries today. I'm in central Florida and just voted in person. Destantis endorsed a whole list of school board members around the state. School board endorsements were decidedly partisan this year. And anyone remember Floridian lawyer Uhlfelder? He dressed up as the grim reaper and walked around the Gulf beaches to protest Desantis' Covid policies back in 2020 and now he's running for attorney general.

Yup, in New York. It's so annoying. wanderingback - today's primary was supposed to be in June with the other primary races that already happened (mostly for State Assembly and US Senate), but they had to push the US House and State Senate races to today after the highest court in the state ruled against the gerrymandered maps created.
After we finally moved in a positive direction given our history of messy election scheduling, this set us back. Turnout is going to be so bad today for what are some really critical House races throughout the state.
I'm in the only NYC congressional district that's held by an R. I'm voting for the previous Congressman she beat in 2020 in the D primary. While her R primary opponent is trailing badly in terms of funding, he's getting enough attention that I think he could pull off an upset. He's extremely right-wing and only became famous after losing his job at one of the local hospitals after refusing to get vaccinated, which is exactly the kind of person right-wingers who are more likely to vote today would support. He might be easier for the D nominee to beat but it's a huge gamble and so I'm kinda hoping the incumbent wins for her primary for that reason. She sucks, but not as much as the other guy.
NY here - I meant to get out and vote early but kept forgetting about it. Now, I've blocked some time on my calendar to zip over to my polling spot (about 1/2 mile away) and get it done. I actually don't have a great preference on my representative primary, just so long as the person is strong enough to knock Elise F'ing Stefanik out of office.

Oy, I feel for you. I'm annoyed her district remained safely R even with redistricting. She's so gross.

I'm annoyed that I'm now in her district, thanks to the redistricting. Not that I won't enjoy voting against her but I'm not confident that she'll be ousted.
So my BFF has a home down in Florida. A lot of her neighbors have drank the Trump/DeSantis koolaid. This one neighbor, who doesn't even have kids in public school in Sarasota, is FLYING back to Florida just for the day to vote in person for the Sarasota school board elections.
DeSatan has backed the "Education not Indoctrination" side and of course, this woman is voting for that.

My parents used to be in her district (and voted for her) and now they're not due to redistricting. Which is only somewhat unfortunate since my brother and his wife just moved close to my parents and will decidedly not vote GOP ever. But yeah, she has a stranglehold on her district now, and she's only been there, what, 8 years or so?

I'm in NY 10 which has been the most contested NY district. I'm just praying it's anyone besides Dan Goldman who is basically trying to just buy the seat. I voted for Yuh-Line Niou who is the Working Families endorsed candidate but I would be fine if Carlina Rivera or Mondaire Jones won (even if he is a West Chester carpetbagger).

Talk about fucking privilege.
Wow, that's commitment. Also. Is she aware of something called a mail in ballot?

Oh didn't you know, there are people against Desantis who work at the post office and are intentionally throwing away ballots. (insert my best eye rolling face)
I’m in NY, but I have COCID, so I guess I don’t get to vote?
Flame away, but personally I'd wear an N95 if you have one, or double mask if you don't, and vote anyway. All poll workers in NY are required to wear masks and they are asking the public to, but won't prevent anyone from voting who refuses (at least that's the guidance we were given in NYC).
You can also talk to the election worker at the front desk and mention you have covid and ask if they can check you in/fill out the ballot outside to limit exposure. At my location the ePollbooks are portable so as long as they have wifi they can move them.
We (Oklahoma) have primary runoffs today, after the initial vote in June. A candidate has to get 50% of the vote to not have a runoff. So the elections today are the top two in races that didn’t hit 50% in June. My D ballot had just two fairly low stakes races - one the D nominee will likely win the general and I’d prefer one, but the other would be fine. The other the D has no chance to win the general.
On the R side, however, there are a couple of big races I’m going to be watching. One is State Superintendent. One candidate was appointed by our corrupt governor as Secretary of Education and is pushing hard to defund public education and move to a full voucher system. He regularly makes unhinged videos about CRT from his car. The other candidate is a current well-liked district superintendent. All my teacher friends are pushing for her and the state library association gave her an award a couple years ago for support of libraries. Needless to say, I hope she wins. There will be a D in the general for that one, but doubtful they’d win the general, unless maybe the whackadoodle car video guy wins this primary.

You can still absentee vote the day of. I forget the process (I volunteered at the pills only once), maybe this website will help. But if not you can ask your husband to go pick up your ballot (not sure if they require your ID or anything).

I’m not sure how this might work in NY, but I know here poll workers have brought ballots to cars for folks with COVID in previous elections. I don’t know exact logistics, but might be worth a call to your election board to see what accommodations can be made.

I voted early last week, but today I waved signs for our local school board rep.
I will say, today gave me at least a glimmer of hope. My parents' neighbor who is super Republican was also there waving signs and supporting the same candidate I was. Now, the only person running against her is an extreme Moms for Liberty-endorsed nightmare, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear my mom's neighbor go on and on about how "those people" are just fear mongering and they claimed to be for liberty, but she didn't believe it.

Trumpers don't believe in voting by mail. In Florida, you can turn in your mail in ballot at an early voting location instead of mailing it. Once I walked into the entrance of the early voting area to put my mail in ballot in the secure box there, and this older gentleman stopped me and was very earnestly telling me that I really shouldn't do that because mail in ballots usually weren't counted and I really needed to just vote in person.

Granted, I voted during my lunch break in my mostly residential neighborhood full of people who don’t WFH, but I was the only person in there besides the staff and it didn’t look like many people passed through. Hopefully there is better turnout in the evening.

I voted today in Florida in my super red county and I have feelings about it. On our ballot was the extension of a millage that, among other things, has been used to increase teacher salaries which, without the millage, are not commensurate with the counties around us. I voted for the millage because I believe with all my heart that teachers deserve a fair living wage.
I am friends with many many teachers on Facebook from years being on pta and involved with my kids’ schools. I see these teachers begging their friends and neighbors to vote for the millage because if salaries are not commensurate with other areas there will be a mass exodus from our county. And I understand.
Except. I see a lot of these teachers on Facebook, I see them in Trump flotillas on the weekends, I see them praising our governor and thanking God we live in Florida where we’ve been open for business throughout the pandemic and have been free from the tyranny of masks. And I feel completely disgusted because these teachers are talking out both sides of their you know whats. They voted for low teacher pay and having to beg their friends and neighbors every three yearsto approve a mandate to keep their pay. It makes me so so so angry at them. After DeSantis’s recent remarks completely devaluing their education and expertise maybe things will change. But I felt absolutely enraged with some people today and very badly for their colleagues:

The two moms for liberty candidate appear to be winning our district. If anyone would like to take in three nice border children to a state where they don’t breed dumbasses, please pm me.
Our M4L SB candidates LOST. I am so fucking happy (yet so disturbed that it was as close as it was). They were also Desantis picks, and had tons and tons of money injected into their campaigns. It was a win for the good guy in my district, and a run-off between a crazy fucker (neither a M4L or RD pick) and a good dem in the other dicey district. The third up went to run-off, too- the incumbent is not great and will likely win against the dem, but it's amazing how much better "not great" looks against some of the competition.
There are plenty of other ugly things happening on our ballots, but these SB races kept me up at night.

If DeSantis was in front of me I would not be able to control myself. His endorsement was I’m sure the big tipping point in my county where he is revered. These candidates have no related work experience and the one homeschools her children. It is truly a sick place I live in.

ACTUAL pedo Matt Gaetz won his primary and therefore is expected to win by double digits in November. While being under federal investigation for sex trafficking a minor.

Anti-CRT car video guy won. I’m so disappointed. The D candidate for the general is strong, and I’d hope folks who supported the other person in the primary will go for her instead, but I just don’t know. If this guy gets elected it will push our public education back so much, and we are already at the bottom of the list.

Daniel Goldman won in NY-10 which has me salty. We're a majority minority district and we get the rich white guy? Hopefully in 2024 he'll face just one progressive challenger and we can replace him.
