my cis kid to say she's a girl or books that acknowledge some children are in families with two married, straight parents. No gender specific sports teams.
Right?
That's why they introduced a bill: "To prohibit the use of Federal funds to develop, implement, facilitate, or fund any sexually-oriented program, event, or literature for children under the age of 10, and for other purposes." where "sexually oriented" includes ""gender identity, gender dysphoria, transgenderism, sexual orientation"

Ugh these people infiltrated our school board meeting last week. They acted abhorrently.
What lewd and lascivious things are they even referencing?
Eta from the article “Among the proposed legislation's definition of the "sexually-oriented material" that it would limit, it includes description and depiction of sexual acts and "lewd or lascivious depiction or description" of human genitals.”

This is beyond upsetting and I’ve already spent time this week crying about it. I feel like I’m at a loss. It’s never been this bad since I can remember.

What the eff are they talking about?
When I ask questions like this, I’m generally told to do my own research.
But my question is (generally) genuine. I don’t want materials that fit that description available to kids under 10, either…but something tells me that those words mean something different to them? Maybe?
My gut says that 90% of people fighting about this don’t actually know what they’re talking about…they’re just repeating talking points.

They aren’t available to kids. It’s literally a fiction they made up. And the other half of the things they propose to ban relate to the existence or acknowledgement of those of us with non-cishet identities.

This is deeply, deeply upsetting and as the parent of a non-binary child, I don’t mean to diminish that. But if the article is correct (and I have no reason to think otherwise), this is mostly just political theater, right?
I’m way more concerned about what’s happening on the state level, at least for now. But god, midterms and the 2024 POTUS election make me want to throw up.

I think it's about as likely as a national abortion ban if republicans gain control. What feels like posturing today can quickly turn to policy tomorrow. See Dobbs. Many of the trigger laws that it unleashed looked like posturing when they went through state legislatures and Roe was still established law.
Which doesn't mean the state level stuff isn't more scary since it's more likely to get enacted. And the 2024 POTUS election is terrifying.
I mean, these are the same people who are spreading the falsehood about litter boxes in schools for kids who identify as cats. It’s all completely made up bullshit. But the scary part is that people believe it so it has traction.

From my perspective, it's giving clout/backing/money/authenticity/weight to candidates for state and local positions. They can point to this federal thing and say "I'm in alignment with the gop" even if has no where to go right now. Right now being the operative phrase.

And the more subtle people who when I say my kid is nonbinary respond with "kids hear about this stuff and want to follow trends" and when I mention that *they have been using different gendered words since they learned to talk* say "little kids can't know that yet."
So which is it, transphobes? Is it a trendy fad that kids pick up on because they are so attuned to peer social cues and too deep into language around gender? Or is it something clueless kids say because they don't pick up the millions of gendered social cues that every baby is exposed to from day one and they can't possibly understand gender?

Yup. It’s both a messaging bill and effectively model legislation of the worst sort. It’s also so overly broad in its definitions as to effectively criminalize *being trans or gender nonconforming* around children, period. This is not just a meaningless political stunt. 2023 is going to be a terrifying year for state legislatures.
Do they not understand that sexual orientation is not the same as gender identity, or they don’t care? Idiots. I hate these assholes and wish the world had been paying more attention to school board elections over the past few years. They are literally harming children (and adults) on purpose and with cruelty. It’s so infuriating.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

They absolutely conflate them based on what I witnessed last week.
Facts don’t matter to them. They change things to fit their dangerous rhetoric. And when you confront them with facts they slip and slide illogically to seemingly related things that they also misrepresent.

They do conflate them but they’re also not bothered about it because they’re counting on being able to use the current vile backsliding on trans rights to undercut gay rights as well. I cannot emphasize seriously enough that this is an extermination agenda.
I didn't want to start a new thread and this seems to fit well here.
This is what Texas Lt Gov has on the back of his flyer. Ugh. On the front, it mentions he increased teacher pay and reduced property taxes. We just got our bill, and yes, the taxes are reduced... by reducing the percentage given to the local school district. (Trying to insert picture below.)

I’m going to guess basic health education… like human anatomy. They like to over exaggerate simple things with fear mongering.

Is that taught to kids under 10? We didn't get health class until high school, I don't think.
My kid watched the "period movie" in 4th grade and she's nine, so, anecdotally, yes it's taught at that age.
Note: I was referring to basic health and human anatomy , just to be clear. I was not echoing the batshit crazy evil, right wing shit referenced early.

In our school district, "family life" classes don't start until halfway through 6th grade, so not until kids are 11/12ish. They also have the specific topics in the curriculum listed on the district website and emailed the topics to parents 2 months ago for review, so what's discussed isn't some big secret.

In my district, yes. Sexual Health Education starts in grade 4 with a basic lesson on human anatomy and what happens early in puberty (sweat smells, hair growth, oily skin, breast buds). Some of our kids are still 8 when they enter grade 4, so depending on when the lesson is taught during the school year the students are anywhere from 8-10 years old. I just sat through SHE today with my grade 5 class (currently ages 9 and 10) and they got a full lesson on the reproductive systems and a more in depth puberty lesson. We talked about erections, wet dreams, and masturbation. Tomorrow we learn about the ovaries, uterus, mensuration, etc.
I don't think I learned about this stuff in school until grade 7 or 8? I definitely remember the lessons about mensuration being after I started my period and I was on the later side in my friend group to start.

Nope
This totally depends on the school/district. Info about puberty, which includes anatomy of genitalia and other body parts is def taught in 4th grade when kids can be 10 and under.
And really kids should be taught this stuff. It’s a shame I have to teach grown adults about their body parts and what is normal.

As far as the people saying this is just a political stunt, fuck that. Have we not learned anything recently? We should def take this stuff seriously and act accordingly. The writing was on the wall for abortion access for many many many years yet people act shocked at the current state of affairs. Same thing is happening here, unfortunately.

My district starts health in K, and its progressively builds. In primary grades, it's stuff about respecting your body, not taking other people's medicine, and families (like when my kids were in K they did a small project on who you live with). I live in a generally politically uncharged area, and even we have a right wing wacko running for school board this year. She's specifically anti "sex and gender education where it's not age appropiate" (she says this on FB all the time and it's not a dog whistle at all). So I want to know what she'd like to tell K kids who have two mommies to do when they get this project, lest they indoctorinate anyone in health class.
I have so much rage about this whenever I think about it. It is real propaganda and gaining traction.

Just to be clear, while the sex education and age stuff is all tangentially relevant, these people think that learning that some kids have two moms or two dads is the same exact thing as teaching them about gay sex. They think that trans people are fetishists and any acknowledgement to children that trans people (including trans children) exist is teaching them about sex.
