goldengirlz that someone trips over the singular cord keeping the internet running and doesn’t plug it back in, lol
Truly, I don’t know that there’s necessarily anything I want to see, as the cesspool is hard to avoid. I know social media is a lot of things to a lot of people. I saw a friend quoted a Tweet lamenting the loss of the little social spaces on the internet as they were all glommed up by larger companies. I do wonder what the internet would look like if the niche places came back. One of my favorite places to go is a local political news blog with regular commenters from my community and surrounding areas. Wholesome AF, even with disagreements.
I’m sorry, but it looks like I just want us all to interact with and know fewer people, lol.
Ha!
In all seriousness, I appreciate your response. The thing about all these companies is that the business model is scale. Even if you build a platform focused on niche communities (or echo chambers, if you will), you will still have a problem with unsavory viewpoints. I can’t think of any social media platform that doesn’t; the only difference is the extent to which you can flip the mute switch.
Is an internet where all the unsavory people convene in dark, unchecked corners better for society than one where everyone shows their true colors out in the open? That’s really the question. And both exist today. I mean, take a site as innocuous and boring as NextDoor, which is the literal embodiment of hyper-local social media. It still has a racism problem. You could take Reddit, which again, is organized around niche interests — still shows you just how fucked up and perverse “niche” can be. Our little GBCN corner could be the closest thing to a likeminded utopia that you could find — but guaranteed there’s a Proboards that’s like a funhouse mirror version of this one, the TERFy versions of ourselves spewing hate and handwringing over @@critical race theory being taught in schools.@@ You can’t get rid of bad people, and the business model doesn’t incentivize trying.
Will people stop buying Teslas now? The blatant racism reported in his plants/company didn't do shit, but maybe letting the other racists have free reign will get liberals to close up their pocketbooks.
Kanye was cancelled by everyone for what he said on Twitter, which Musk is going to allow. But then again Kanye is also a black man with a product that people can live without.
I deleted it from my phone and stopped using it a couple weeks ago. I'm trying to deactivate my account, but it's an issue- long story. I hope i can take care of it soon. I will miss the friends I chatted with though. I miss you already, starlily

😥 You didn't give up other social media though, right? I can still find you elsewhere?

. I’m still on FB. Maybe I’ll break down and start a new Twitter for account one day. But I’m just going to use it to talk to you guys and not get sucked into the fray. I hope.
I only created an account to like and retweet dem voices. I think I've only actually posted twice in the last four years. Would it be better for my own mental health to delete my account? Probably. It's not like I have that much impact as an amplifier, but it does give me the sense that I'm contributing in some way beyond just donating to various causes and platforms. And I feel like I have to do 'something' right now, so I'll probably at least wait to delete until after midterms.

I do have an account as I needed it to read threads I get linked to. I think I followed a couple accounts when I first signed up initially, but I cannot say I use it in any real sense.
If I'm missing out on tweets from my regular resources, they'll get that info to me another way.
Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk fired top executives in an effort to avoid hefty severance payouts, while lining up other layoffs as soon as Saturday to avoid stock grants due on Nov. 1, according to media reports on Saturday.

ETA: Kanye absolutely deserved to be cancelled.
I can't exactly stop buying Telsas, because I never bought one in the first place, but we were thinking about getting one a while back, then I told DH he needed to look into other brands when I started hearing about what an asshole Musk is. That said, we probably aren't buying a car any time soon anyway. Really hard to boycott something you never bought in the first place... same problem I have with boycotting Twitter...
I'm in the market for an EV and have crossed Tesla off my list. I know it doesn't make a difference for one person to do this, but I can't stomach the idea of padding EM's pocket, even a tiny bit.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I've never been an active user. Mostly, my H would DM me tweets of interest. I don't plan to delete at this moment, but my husband did and loudly moved to some other platform, so I won't have much reason to go.
It was already on my bad side because I think it causes unhealthy discourse - there is not room for nuance in 140 characters and it incentives sensationalizing everything.
I successfully quit Facebook several years ago so I think I will be able to stick to bare minimum use.
Unfortunately I am willing to bet that there are enough racists that probably want Teslas for their next vehicle.
How will they square that with their vehement anti-EV beliefs?
I asked this of my climate change denying CW who recently bought a Tesla and his answer was gas prices. He seems to really dislike the car overall though.
I've seen political commentators say that Elon is trying to run off the sane users so that it can become a right wing, conspiracy theory playground. But that could be a conspiracy theory in itself lol
I have an account, but never tweet or anything. I only pop in to Twitter when I'm really really really bored but I don't want to get off the internet, and then only look at what's trending.

I don't think this isn't what is happening, but it seems stupid. There are two right wing Twitter dupes that are immensely unpopular (truth social and parler). They are right wing echo chambers that bore the right wingers.
Since it's getting so toxic so quick, I'll be on there only to check one community account (no alternate exists and it's necessary info). I just don't see any needs to be on there and get mad at the owner.
I've joined Twitter a couple of times, but never got into it. I don't like the layout and prefer to connect with people I know (either from real life or from here, mostly). And basically everyone I know is already on Facebook or Instagram so I never saw much use for myself.

Well we know what they all want to say with their so called “free speech” bullshit, so I’m out. I don’t want to accidentally come across that shit in my feed ever.

My community is starting to move to mastodon. And there was a big thing yesterday about the fee. There is a part of me that wants to be stubborn and not let him run off all the voices he doesn’t want heard. But, I also feel like that would be like being on 4chan for spite.
I'll continue, but only because I'm very active in my favorite sports team's Twitter community and don't want to lose touch with a lot of those people who aren't on FB. If, as a community, we can find a better place I'd leave for that. I've also been on Twitter for 14 years and some of these friendships are that old.
