An ex-Army major who owns a local bar was at Club Q with his family to see his daughter's BFF perform in the drag show. He tackled and disarmed the shooter and beat him with his own gun, and it sounds like other patrons were involved as well in bringing the shooter down and keeping him down.
His family made it out mostly okay, but his daughter's boyfriend was killed.
“It was Mr. Fierro’s first time at a drag show, and he was digging it. He had spent 15 years in the Army, and now relished his role as a civilian and a father, watching one of his daughter’s old high-school friends perform.
“These kids want to live that way, want to have a good time, have at it,” he said as he described the night. “I’m happy about it because that is what I fought for, so they can do whatever they hell they want.”
😭😭😭. He saved lives with his bravery, but also, this kind of bravery - the kind needed to run at a shooter and take them down - should never be necessary.

Here is a video clip of an interview he gave. Heartbreaking.
Absolutely heartbreaking.
As an aside, I’m not really sure how I’m supposed to just show up at work this week like everything is fine. This is not fine. I’m not ok. I’m scared for my community. I’m enraged that the genocide against us has to reach this level before anyone seems to care. I’m disappointed at the silence from so many allies. I’m really struggling.

If anyone wants to buy a gift card or swag to support the co-owner who stopped the shooter, here's the brewery's website: www.atrevidabeerco.com/home
Thank you for posting this. I sent this link to my H, and he bought a t-shirt.
I know everyone, myself included, is praising the bravery of this man, and rightfully so. But it's also supremely fucked up that this needed to happen to him, because these events have now retraumatized an already traumatized combat veteran. (The NYT article detailed his prior struggles with post-military life.) Why does this country have to subject war veterans to combat situations in civilian daily life? (Obviously that is a rhetorical question. I'm just so frustrated.)
Colorado police prioritize proper pronouns, names of shooting victims
When the names of those shot to death in a Colorado Springs LGBTQ bar were read at a police news conference Monday, one thing stood out from the procedure that has become routine in a nation plagued by mass shootings: The police chief stated the pronouns of the deceased.
“Kelly Loving. Kelly’s pronouns are she/her. Daniel Aston. Daniel’s pronouns are he/him. Derrick Rump. Derrick’s pronouns are he/him,” and so on, went Chief Adrian Vasquez.
It was a small gesture, but an important one, LGBTQ advocates said. That a police department in a conservative part of Colorado known for being home to the Air Force Academy would take such care with an often politically divisive detail came as a surprise to some.

It's fucking bullshit that people have to die to get the absolute bare minimum of respect.
This probably won’t be articulated well, but I’m really angry about the World Cup right now too. They told a bunch of teams they can’t wear rainbow armbands as they were planning to do. The teams were willing to accept being fined, but it sounds like Qatar will remove them from the stadium and possibly prosecute them.
This shooting happening at the same time is really bothering me.
We continue to allow these bigoted people and leaders to put this out there. And I know FIFA has long been a mess in various ways, but I’m really pissed that they essentially let Qatar buy the World Cup when this place is known for human rights atrocities.

I don't know how to link it here, but I watched a video on Twitter they say is the shooter's dad. He sounded drunk (was slurring a lot). He said he was relieved his son wasn't gay because he was at a gay bar. He also said he praised violent behavior from a young age because it gets noticed. After being told his son is being accused of killing 5 people, he only reacts by saying at least he's not gay. Please tell me this isn't real because this is a literal terrorist. WTF.

Also, sort of off topic, but i saw in the article he said how he's Mormon and that they don't "do gay."

I would not draw too many conclusions from that support, given that it also establishes broader and more sweeping exceptions and exemptions for discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and relationships for religious reasons than exist in current federal law. That is their stake in it, no matter what else they might say publicly.

I'm not saying it's good, but i feel like it could be a step toward the right direction?

Also that video needs a major trigger warning. Why is this getting so much air time? Seeing hate like this on a loop after processing what happened this weekend is really hard. It’s impossible to escape and the amount of doubling down on the “if they don’t want to be shot stop being/doing X” narrative from the far right is beyond disturbing and doesn’t need to be further platformed.

I apologize, I wasn't thinking through it fully other than being so angered by it. I added more to my post but please let me know if you (or anyone else!) prefers I delete the link or add anything else.
I just found out one of the victims went to my teeny tiny high school, about a decade after I did. I'm hoping this will help that insular community realize the level of tragedy this truly is.
Alleged?! Literally dozens of people witnessed this crime being committed, we do not need to act like that fact is up for debate.
I think they have to say alleged until he's been tried and convicted. I remember getting upset about this in the past, but it's apparently either legally required or at least by journalistic convention.

I’ve seen plenty of news stories about other crimes and trials where this kind of language hasn’t been used (particularly it seems to be more common to do this when the crime is bias motivated), but I also want to point out that humoring this as a convention is wrong in situations like this where there is no ambiguity about the basic facts of the case (that this perpetrator was the shooter.) It’s different than saying someone is, for example, a murderer, before they’re convicted. What he will be convicted of remains to be seen but he was unequivocally the shooter.

Also I’ll be infuriated by anything I damn well please. The entire situation is fucking infuriating and the reporting has been consistently awful. Fuck the media.

Oh, I'm not saying you shouldn't be infuriated; I didn't intend to come across that way. And I agree it's a stupid convention at best, often times very harmful. My understanding is it protects them against libel suits, which, right or wrong, I can understand these entities just wanting to entirely avoid.
I looked around and didn’t see this in the thread or elsewhere, but holy fuck, DHS officially stared the obvious and issues a warning of domestic terrorism directed at LBGTQ+. This is dated a week ago, and I just stumbled on it tonight.

I realize I’m 2 weeks late to this, but I think you should delete it. I was a little horrified that you thought it should be shared, to be honest.
