I think the GrubHub idea is a good one, and is something everyone can use. Honestly, I'd just do that again.
Gift idea from him to his boss: The hard work he has done all year. I personally would do nothing more (unless he's very close to/friends with his boss outside work, in which case he could do something more personal).
Ditto Yeti, GCs, or cash money for the team. For the boss-do they have a hobby or something they're really into? Like are they super into cooking, bourbon, wine etc? My lead gets a kick out of the talking ornaments my coworker has on her tree so we're getting her a couple of those in characters she likes, plus a gift card.
I’d either do a gift card or some kind of consumable gift (cookies, candy, nice Harry & David-type food basket). Even if they don’t like the actual food, they can use it when they host or re-gift. Obviously avoid alcohol unless you know they imbibe, and foods like pork if there are religious or cultural reasons.
I take my team out for lunch and give them the rest of the afternoon off - used to do wine/chocolates type thing but it's actually much nicer just to have some casual time together and then a few free hours. I only do gifts for my team, never my boss.
I have seven direct reports and I am giving each one a gift card to their favorite small business. I sent them an email with 3-5 questions (favorite coffee shop if any, favorite candy, favorite large retailer, favorite restaurant, favorite small business). On their birthdays I get them small gift cards to their favorite coffee shop (or tea shop or ice cream shop if they don’t like coffee) packaged with their favorite candy, and at the holidays, I get them a gift card to one of their favorite small businesses or a major retailer if we aren’t local to their small business and I can’t get them online.

My employer gives us a budget and tells us to pick out some ideas for gifts they can buy. The company is paying for the gifts. If they do a gift card they have to tax us, but if it is an actual item they don’t. Always fun to see what I get from my ideas list! Everyone is always so excited for their gift and to see what others got.
