I think I'm going to make her take the amoxycillin. Curious; WWYD?
DD started to feel sick on Monday evening. She has had a fever since Tuesday morning, scary high (104.8!!) Tues evening, but lower since. Today's the best she's done the entire time. Woke up with 101, but went down to normal after Motrin and didn't rise again until this afternoon.
Saw the doctor today. DD likely has the actual flu, but we didn't swab (ironically, kids just finally got shots on Sunday). Complained yesterday of ear pain, but today says it is fine. One ear looks like it's infected (not awful, but infected). Dr said in light of ongoing fever, the way the ear looks, and how congested DD has been, she leans toward doing amoxycillin and we picked up the Rx.
DD says her ear feels FINE today and doesn't want the amoxycillin b/c she doesnt' like it. However, she's back to 102 this afternoon again and fell asleep on the couch and is just not well. I feel like as sick as she still is, we should do the amoxycillin in case her ear IS affecting her overall illness and fevers more than we might know.

Although it would have been good to have flu test results, I’d probably give the medicine.
I am the same about contributing to antibiotic resistance, but I think you have to try what the doctor recommended.
Of course, it’s fresh in my mind that a coworker’s child had the flu and an ear infection at the same time. The liquid antibiotics and later antibiotic ear drops didn’t help and the kid ended up going in to the (outpatient) hospital a couple sessions for IV antibiotics.
There are so many bacterial infections running concurrent with the flu right now. I currently have the flu and tonsillitis. DS just got over really bad strep. Normally my doctor (and I) take a wait and see approach, but not this season.
I started it tonight. The ear infection is secondary to the flu or whatever else it is that she has, but with her persistent fevers I feel like we just had to start it even if her ear might already be improving.

I’m on amoxicillin now for a bilateral ear infection that occurred with a cold or flu virus last week. It wasn’t COVID, but they never tested me for anything else so who knows. I didn’t have a fever but the ear pain was awful.the meds worked pretty quickly so I'm glad I got them. I hope your dd feels better soon!
