Listening to the HBO companion podcast, because I've seen a lot in articles that pop up on my Facebook feed to know they put a lot of tiny details in there and I need someone to point them out and the podcast is pretty good. It's called HBOs The Last of Us Podcast if anyone wants to listen.

Yes - I listen to that too. I did it with Chernobyl and enjoyed the insights.
Love it. Haven't watched ep 3 yet cause I haven't been in a good space to watch what I known will be emotional. (I don't mind spoilers though!) But it's so well done so far. I love that the way it's shot you can see that it was so influenced/true to the games. The driving through the field in the first episode especially looked like it was taken right from a game without being disorienting. I like that, since it means they're embracing the story's origin.
H never played the game but knows enough about it and has been so blown away so far. I really enjoy it too. Pedro Pascal is a treasure.
Episode 3 was so so good! The mouth tentacle things freak me out so I hide my eyes during those parts but I’m glad it’s not as gory as TWD.
I will take gore and run of the mill zombies any day. I literally had trouble eating my lunch today b/c of this thread, which I chose to engage in and discuss. Lol
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

Stupid things I think about::
How long would it take to kill a billion people? Wouldn’t the zombies eventually run out of food? How does killing it in the head destroy the fungi? Will the fungi evolve?

(Haven’t watched the third episode yet)
I’m loving it so far.
I live in Michigan, it is FREEZING. I'm taking my dog to the bathroom a few times a day thinking SURELY that fungus would die here, it's too damn cold 🤣
I would think the bullet kills the host but the fungi probably still lives it just can't run at you? Cause they were testing some fungi on the ground to see if it was alive in episode 2 and it looked like some of the dead bodies they found still had fungi growing out of them.

I am obsessed with the show but I hate having to wait a week between episodes! Ep 3 was absolutely brilliant and bittersweet. Nick Offerman has the most incredibly expressive eyes. The whole time I was going crazy trying to figure out why Frank looked so familiar; it wasn't until the credits rolled that I realized omg Armand from White Lotus!! The American accent threw me as did the beard.
An absolute masterclass in storytelling. I can't wait for the rest of the season!

Murray Bartlett is incredible. He was in Looking, which I completely forgot about. I also highly recommend Tales of the City on Netflix and Welcome to Chippendales on Hulu (and obviously s.1 of White Lotus for those who haven't seen it) for more excellent Murray content.

The male lead explains it to Ellie in the 3rd episode: infection happened all at once because mutated fungi got into the world's flour supply. I don't know the answers to your other questions, although he did say some zombies have been alive for over 20 years.
I also loved the third episode; it helps that I have a crush on Nick Offerman. They used the same music, "On the Nature of Daylight," that was in the movie Arrival. It gets me every time.

Episode 3 is probably the single most beautifully authentic piece of queer television that has ever aired to a broad audience. I don’t think I will ever recover.
S/O TLOU, did anyone catch SNL last night? Pedro Pascal did a fabulous job as host. He has such great comedic timing/delivery and you can tell he's game for anything no matter how absurd. I haven't laughed that hard at so many sketches in awhile.
(Also, I'm always in awe of the quality of their pre-taped segments):

At the start of the pandemic he did a zoom live-read of an episode of Community with the cast and it was brilliant. He could not keep it together. 100% worth a watch.

That was too funny! I love infectious laughter like that 😂
I had no interest in this show, but you guys have changed my mind!
My 17 yo is notorious for not wanting to get into a tv show. And was being stubborn about not wanting to watch it. Lol
But we had just finished watching beauty and the beast on tv Saturday evening and were flipping through the channels. I saw episode 3 on, so we watched it, and she got into it. So then we flipped around, and episode 2 was on. And she was really getting into it, so then we had to watch episode 1, and now she’s really into it. (Even if she watched them in reverse. Haha). And she watched episode 4 with us, and was really into it!
(We also watched last weeks SNL based off comments here, and I haven’t watched SNL in years but we all laughed so hard at so many of the skits! It was a really great episode!)

You can totally watch episode 3 w/o watching anything else. I've recommended it to so many people. It's fantastic.
I heard Nick Offerman almost didn't do it b/c of his busy schedule but his wife pushed hard for it. I want to rewatch now that I've seen it b/c the first viewing I kept expecting it to go differently.

I do agree with this. Episode 3 is like a mini movie all in its own.

I'm not into video games and H isn't either. We haven't watched TWD or any other zombie type shows. After seeing so many posts on social media about the show and then having a couple friends recommend it H and I started it over the weekend, binged episodes 1-3 on Saturday night and then couldn't wait for the new episode on Sunday. Give it a try for sure!
I didn't love episode 4 as much as the first 3. It kind of dragged on and didn't keep me as engaged. I am interested to see where it's going with this new group led by Melanie Lynskey. (again, I don't know anything about the video game or story line)
While not unusual for this time of year, my hands are rough, especially in between my fingers. So, obviously I imagine myself as transforming into a walking fungus.
