One thing that bugs me is Joel, against all odds gets Ellie to the fireflies, which Marlene admits was basically an impossible feat, and then they are going to boot him to the highway with zero payment of any kind/zero discussion of how they will “repay” him, , no car, and no gun after telling him the kid he has protected for months is going to die anyway...
Seems reason enough to be mad… even if he didn’t love Ellie. 🤣
It’s interesting to think that if she would have went with Tommy, he probably would have made a different decision and/or she would have never been in Salt Lake in the first place. The fork in the road choice.
She's always Chrissy Seaver first to me so we can be old together.
I’m definitely old enough that I recognized her immediately as Chrissy. She really hasn’t changed at all since she was little.
The way my mind was flipping through every 80s/early 90s sitcom trying to place her...I immediately said to H "omg where do I know her from?? She was a kid on a show back in the day and looks the exact same!" Lol

[]And she was Chrissy Seaver on Growing Pains!! (Am I dating myself!?). When i saw her last name was Johnson, I thought she had to be Dakota Johnson’s sister bc that’s who she reminded me of too, but nope.[/quote]
As soon as they showed her face I knew exactly who she was. I can usually see actors in earlier or later years and know who they are. My husband can never see it! I really enjoyed this season and I had no knowledge of the game.
I have a question because clearly I missed something at the beginning of the show.
Ellie needs to get from Boston to SLC with the fireflies. Marlene was IN Boston, with Ellie, yeah?
Why did she not bring her? Why did Ellie have to go with Joel?
Clearly there was a reason but I obviously missed it. As soon as a I saw Marlene again I was like, wait, why didn't you just bring her?
Joel and Tess were only supposed to get Ellie to the fireflies that were outside the city. When they got there they were all dead already. Tess understood how important Ellie was to finding a cure and made Joel take her the rest of the way. That was never the original plan and should have only been a one day thing.

I'll add, I'm still a little shocked Marlene didn't take more precautions in escorting him out. Once she saw how attached to Ellie Joel had grown and had observed that he managed to deliver Ellie safely and while Marlene barely made it w/a team of trained soldiers....
I guess hindsight is 20/20. The moral ambiguity is so much more interesting. Reminds me of some of the darker moments in ER, like when Dr. Greene let the death row guy die in the elevator and pretended to shock him.

the whole bit with the fireflies …. To what others said, rushing Ellie into surgery, not having any conversations, then kicking Joel out with a “shoot him” mandate if he does anything. After she just said “I owe you”.

For a second I actually thought she was trying to help him. Like "hit the road, wink wink what I really mean is pretend to leave and we'll pretend to make you", Then I realized that oh no she really does mean it, she has no idea what she's in for.
I also expected the hospital to be a bit more..clean? Functioning? They're doing brain surgery on her in a moldy operating room in a last ditch effort to save humanity and then what was their plan for whatever samples they took? It didn't look like they had the capacity to actually do any scientific work.

Yeah I am REALLY questioning anyone who thinks Ellie should have been sacrificed to save humanity. I am 98% sure that whatever came from taking her brain out, would not have resulted in a cure under these conditions, with all research happening in the time it takes Joel to wake up.

Nope nope nope.
Not to mention, who do they test it on…? Inject someone and put them in a room with a clicker and hope it works out? Put multiple people in a room with a clicker and hope it works out…? Are they going to be signing up for that job themselves? Probably not. Plus, there is reason to believe the Fireflies wouldn’t want to work with Fedra. There would be a war for power and control of the cure.
I know that they want us to forget all that because it doesn’t factor into Joel’s decision, but I just can’t ignore the absurdity of the Fireflies. I can understand how Joel is villainous from the perspective of the Fireflies/their families. But, I really cannot see the argument that Joel stole Ellie’s agency and doomed humanity from viewers. Even if she was an adult, I couldn’t see this being an ethical/logical ask.

I don't know, I can see them easily finding people who were recently bitten but haven't yet turned to test whatever 'cure' they find pretty easily, although their window for testing would be super short and they would need to keep finding people over and over again. But considering just on their journey, they could have tested both Tess and Sam, I think there will always be people coming up against the infected and getting bitten, and then once they are, being willing to be test subjects before they turn.
The actress who played Ellie in the game and Ellie's mom in the show - her face hasn't changed since she played Mel Gibson's daughter in What Women Want. It's crazy how she looks exactly the same lol

Omg. Thank you for saying this! I’ve been wracking my brain to figure out who Bella reminds me of, and it’s her! I’m

The only thing I could think of with the surgeon was “huh, I bet he’s not even a surgeon. He’s probably a nephrologist or something” and that is why it would kill her. He had no idea what he was doing. Her head wasn’t even shaved.

This thread convinced me to start watching this. (I started watching the first episode, but had to stop because N came up and wanted to watch Pokémon with me, but I plan on making H watch the entire episode with me tonight and binging the rest.)
To make it clear just how big of a deal this is, I have watched exactly one series (Schitt’s Creek) in its entirely since Dexter, and I didn’t even see the last season of that one (which I know is not a bad thing given the whole Deb dying and Dexter becoming a lumberjack thing.) I haven’t watched GoT. I haven’t watched a single episode of This is Us. I have never seen Breaking Bad or Handmaid’s Tale or Stranger Things. Since 2013, I have lived under a pop culture rock.
We are working our way through Ted Lasso and I’m throwing this one and Abbott Elementary into the mix while I’m on leave. 🎉

The last episode was my favorite and I just finished it. How stupid is Marlene to tell Joel before the surgery was complete. That’s what I can’t get over. I know she thinks of Joel as this mercenary soldier of fortune type, but that’s the most far fetched to me:

There were a number of things around the surgery that annoyed me. How fast they took her into surgery, the fact her head wasn't shaved (I mean, real world aspect - I get it. But...), then Marlene after Joel's FIRST protest, kicks him out and tells the guys escorting him to shoot him if he does anything.
Really?
20 years in and this is how Marlene is playing all this?
underwaterrhymes I could barely cope with those episodes a week apart, what a binge that must have been!
Also, I see you've never seen Breaking Bad, may I highly recommend it to you for a future watch? It is my favorite TV series of all time. (Though TLOU could probably give it a run for its money) Just brilliant writing, cinematography, acting, all of it.
