H is super annoying about fluid levels in vehicles in general, both of my sons refer to him as the fluid police. So we have been lectured on the horrors of letting your gas get that low. It's hard on the fuel pump and to replace that you have to remove the gas tank and the labor costs....blah blah blah. (in his defense I did have a fuel pump crap out one time it was an expensive bill. He was not wrong...) We treat 1/4 tank in our house like you're coasting on fumes because life is just easier that way.
I've also been known to stop to put 2 gallons of gas in my car because I happened to be somewhere where gas was cheaper than around my normal travel area.
My gas is topped off once a week, but I start to stress if the gas gauge even begins to flirt with 1/4th tank. The thought of being stranded on a major highway during rush hour gives me hives and my dad, a gear head, always stressed it wasn’t good for the car.
On the flip side, I have a family member for which running out of gas has been a running joke for years. They are no longer allowed to borrow a car from us after running out of gas twice, once causing a $$ tow and diagnostic fee.
This little light of mine... I'm gonna let it shine.
I am the WORST at putting in gas before I have no other choice. I am trying to be better and put gas in at 50 miles to empty, but it has been hard for me to do that.
I really should fill up more frequently as I have a disabled father who needs me a lot. I would hate to have an emergency and I need to stop to get gas.
My ‘low gas’ light comes on 50 miles before E. Given the price of gas in CA, I wait until that light goes on before I fill up.
I think this is what was throwing me. Big difference to me between a “gas light” and E. I’ve never seen E, but my gaslight pops on at 65/70, and as I said earlier, if I have nowhere to go I might not rush to the gas station with 65 gallons left if it’s cold or I’m lazy.
The two lessons I specifically remember my grandpa (who didn't talk much) teaching me as a teenager:
1) Pay yourself first 2) Never go below 1/4 tank
I've listened to that advice for most of my adult life. Now, I generally don't let my car get below when the screen tells me I have 50-75 miles to go before empty.
I love driving on fumes!! Haha....but yeah i always wait until my fuel light comes on and it depends on the day/schedule of how low I'll let it get. Speaking of ...... I will not make it home today from work unless I get some gas asap.
My parents are complete opposite though....they start to get nervous when they only have half a tank left.
I typically fill up when the gas light comes on at 50 till empty unless we are expecting a hurricane or other crazy weather for multiple days, the I go ahead and fill up even if I'm not near empty.

So this is a rare occasion where I have my shit together, lol. Every Sunday I fill the tank and throw out any trash from the week. It's an awesome little ritual that has saved me from those oh shit moments when my light comes on and I'm running late/ have to drive carpool/ can't find a gas station. It's been super helpful for my anxiety!!!
My car displays how many miles until empty, and I once got down to zero (still made it to the gas station, which was thankfully downhill). And have been in the single digits a lot.
I don't drive that much and I hate getting gas, so I tend to put it off as long as possible.
I used to run it down to fumes but 9/11, I was on fumes on my way to work. I made the mental note I needed to stop for gas on my way home. I forgot that night I had 2 classes and I didn’t get out until 10 pm. When I went to get gas, the local stations were doing some massive gouging (there were repercussions later) but that didn’t help me. Nothing like waiting in a very long line for gas, hoping to make it to the pump and knowing you are getting gouged.
