A (5) has very fine, thin hair. It's slightly wavy, mostly straight. It is constantly tangled and all over the place. She screams 99% of the time brushing her hair, even when she tries to do it herself.
Current products we use: Aussie moist shampoo, Love Beauty Planet 5 in 1 conditioner, Garnier 10 in 1 styling cream after showers, and Raw Sugar strawberry oat spray when we brush dry hair, and we use a Wet Brush. She showers every other day and always wears it down. If it's not dry before bed, I usually try to braid it, but that's rare. She doesn't like the blow dryer.
Any good products to help with her hair? We definitely need shampoo but any product recommendations would be great.

Is she open to a cut? Her hair sounds similar to my 4.5 year olds and we chopped it off - she’s currently rocking the cutest bob and caring for it is so simple.

I feel your pain with a girl with similar hair, and sadly have no good advice other than, it Does slowly get better. My stylist recently said age 7 is around when most of the baby hair is gone, and it made me realize that at 6.5, DD’s hair is finally getting to be less annoying to deal with. It still looks like it needs brushing within 10 minutes of us brushing it, but the tangles are less difficult to get out. Last summer we cut it up to shoulder-length and that helped a lot even as we have let it grow and stay longer since then.
My 7 yo son has long hair and it sounds similar. We are using Aussie kids curly shampoo/conditioner and Cantu Kids detangler each morning. We still use Suave kids detangler if in a pinch, but the Cantu is much better. I have a garnier leave-in that I pull out if needed for more slip but that is way less now.
His hair has grown dramatically since we started this routine a few months ago (less breakage). It is now mid-back. His hair is straight with a wave.

Ah yes, forgot to mention that! She's had 2 haircuts ever lol. I finally talked her into the second one a few months ago. It only helped a little. Her hair will NOT grow! She barely had any hair for so long compared to E who got his first haircut before he was a year old because it was in his eyes. The front part around her face is about chin length and has only maybe been trimmed a tiny bit. I do think she'd look adorable with a chin length bob, maybe I can talk her into that!
Honestly wearing it up has been much better for us for tangles. Either a pony tail or braids every morning. I let it slide during school but then she would get food in it. For summer camp because of swimming etc I always insisted on it being tied back.
My three year old has a Bob cut with bangs because she refuses any clips, hair ties etc and hates having it brushed, braided or clipped. We condition every night and use shampoo maybe twice a week? We brush with a wide tooth comb in the shower and then wet brush when it’s almost dry. We use honest or Lolavie leave in spray conditioner in the mornings if we need it. Silk pillowcase might help too.
Edit: go for the Bob cut! It’s so cute on a young girl.
waverly I used to put it up all the time for this reason. Her hair was so uneven and tangly I couldn't do anything with it. It's still uneven because the front hair just won't grow but the back does. She refuses ponytails now but maybe I could talk her into braids if we have enough time in the morning.
gastro I refuse to do bangs because every time I do them for myself I regret it haha. I might have to try the comb in the shower, I should really be doing that for my hair too. I've also considered a silk pillowcase, I will have to look into that for her! Although I don't feel like it really helped my hair that much
This is a dumb question, but how do you go about combing her hair? Scalp to end in one swoop when right out of the shower? Does it take a long time? Does the time to comb it all out or pain of pulling on knots bother her more?
My kid’s hair is knotty. We did cut it to her chin and it helps. The back still gets some wild knots.

I start on the bottom and work the knots out as I move up. It does usually take a few minutes, though it's a lot easier when it's wet, with product in it, and I've helped with her hair in the shower. H usually lets her do it herself and I did tell him earlier he needs to help her more, because she definitely doesn't do it "right" lol.

Okay. I ask because different people have different styles. I use a flat comb and do very small knotted sections at a time. I hold the hair just above the knot so there’s no pulling on her scalp. It’s time consuming if the knotted area is large with lots of separating to make small sections, but as the top of the head is usually fine, once I’m thru the mid-end of hair, the rest is easy. I just use shampoo and conditioner. We have a detangling spray but that’s never worked worth a damn.
My kid just hates to sit for this process. When her hair was long, it could have been 20 min. Now that’s short, it’s more like five.
As all hair is different, I hope you find something that works!

I try to hold it above the knot but it's still not enough 😫 We did try combing it in the shower with conditioner, then brushing it with product after and it was a lot easier. I asked her if we could cut it to chin length and she said yes! So maybe we'll try that too.
What kind of brush are you using when the hair is dry? 100% boar bristle brushes pull less and are the winner in our house.
The same Wet Brush we use all the time (well, we have like 4 of them lol). I'll have to pick one of these up!
Good luck! I think you'll really like a bristle brush! Just know that the bristles don't usually go all the way though the hair (that's why it's more gentle), so after I get most of the hair smoothed out with the bristle brush, I do a final pass with a plastic brush. Right against the nape of the neck is almost impossible to de-knot with a bristle brush alone.
My older daughters hair was always in tangles forever and what finally worked as switching from the wet brush to the tangle teezer brush, switching her conditioner to mixed chicks brand deep conditioner in the tub and swapping her pillowcase to a silk one so it wasn't getting worse at night. We also braid at night. This has really made it SO much better. I think 75% is the mixed chicks that shit is amazing.

DD is 9 and her hair is similar. Similarly, she had her second ever cut at 5 and it was slow to grow, but is nice and long now and is getting thicker. Our best advice is to have her put in her conditioner in the shower and then call you in to comb it while it's got conditioner in it. We have a comb with a wide tooth side that we start with and then use the narrower tooth side once the big tangles are out. Then rinse the conditioner. Brush again with a wet brush after she's out of the shower, braid for bed.
Also, I try and spray detangler and give it a good minute to soak before I start brushing from the bottom up. It goes much better if I do small sections working my way from bottom to the top.
My daughter has super long hair and she has to wear it in braid when she sleeps or it gets super tangled. She also wears it in a braid almost every day. The wet brush is the only one she likes, but not the regular wet brush but the one with tea tree oil in it, it is so good. We also use Amika detangler (it's called The Wizard I think) and it works so good and smells so good. I don't know what a 5 in 1 conditioner is, but it sounds like that's a lot of product. I would probably skip the styling cream.

When my girls were younger, I kept a spray bottle of DIY leave in conditioner in their bathroom. I just mixed a squirt of conditioner with water and put it in a spray bottle. It helps a lot, and works better than any commercial leave in conditioner.
Also, for days we had serious knots and tears -- this stuff is magic: Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil. It's crazy expensive -- I've only ever bought the travel size bottle, and it lasts a really long time because you only use a couple of pumps. It does leave the hair greasy if you don't wash it that night, though. So, if I'd use it in the morning, that night had to turn into a hair washing night.
