My dd got Instagram for her 14th bday in Nov. She is not allowed to take her phone to school so she's not on it during the school day (which would be a big no for me.) If the school she attends next year allows phones, I will turn off insta during school hours. Honestly, I think it's great. She follows her favorite universities, Broadway shows (big theater fan) and travel bloggers. If I see a good recipe, I send it to her. I monitor who she follows and the only random one is Paris Hilton.. why?? idk and I encourage her "friends" to be her actual friends. Her account is private. I'm good with her being on Insta. It's the only SM she has.

I actually kind of see where he's coming from in regard to Tiktok vs Instagram. If he doesn't post or comment on Tiktok, and the algorithm has picked up that he just really loves animal videos, then he probably is just scrolling through watching animal videos for the most part. Sure he could search for other things or come across inappropriate stuff, but it doesn't sound like he's communicating with friends on there or talking to strangers. Instagram would be more communicating with friends (sounds like his friend group uses instagram to communicate) and the kids post their own pictures, send dms, etc. It isn't so much the platform but how he will be using it.
At my elementary school, the biggest problem we see with the older kids is with group texts. It's outside of school, but we certainly hear about it at school when something goes wrong. If he already texts all the friends and has Tiktok, I don't see why Instagram is any different at all.
