sonrisa when do you need shorts? I haven’t owned a pair in probably 10 years. I either wear a skort/skirt/dress, or capri black tight yoga/athletic pants.

Honestly, right now I can't remember. I would purge them tomorrow if I didn't have a strong memory of wishing I hadn't before. lol.
I wear shorts and it’s not the greatest look sometimes but for doing yard work in humidity, skirts are not a great choice and our climate is far more humid than SoCal. I’m just aware that if I want to look nicer I can throw on a skirt but sometimes it’s really too hot for any kind of pants. Lots of time we can get away with pants but for those 90 degree humid days spent outside it’s not going to work. If I’m inside the AC sure absolutely but outside, no. Capris can be a compromise but I don’t tend to look much better in them.
Not needing shorts ever is one of the things I've never related to less on this board! On the other hand I only have two pairs of jeans and zero pairs of real pants.
Anyways. I purged my closet in January. I was looking for something, couldn't find it, and it turned into a whole thing. I love the way it looks though and I should have done it sooner. It was a great way to see what I needed, too.

Yes. I live in NC, but previously lived in NY and WI. Shorts have always been a staple for me.
Truly I'm just jealous. I'm already dreading the sweaty season where what you wear doesn't even matter for comfort. I went to San Francisco in August of 2010 and it reached 80 one day. Locals were complaining about how hot it was and I was like are you kidding? This is a dream, lol.
Large closets weren’t a thing when our house was built so it’s forced us to be pretty minimalist, and even more so now that we both mostly WFH.
My husband works in the office 1-2 days a week now. He has just enough business attire to last him a full 1-week business trip if needed. My office went permanently fully remote in 2020 but I still occasionally have to be in court. I saved my suits and some blouses, but sold or donated most of my business casual wardrobe since I no longer need it at all. I wear mostly athleisure when WFH and since it’s as hot as the face of the sun half the year here that includes many shorts.
I can’t live without my denim shorts! I live in them for summer. But everyone has different looks and uniforms. I wear a ton of dresses but own/wear very few skirts (although I did embrace the maxi skirt trend last summer).
OP - I love declutterinf and it’s so freeing. I personally can’t do a capsule wardrobe because I really like clothes, but I’m pretty ruthless on most everything else in my home. Go for it!
Nobody wears shorts here unless you're a tourist or one of those flip flops in January dudes. I have one pair as well, maybe worn once a year in Mexico.
Really? I never used to, but since having kids I wear them a lot and I’ve noticed I’m not alone. It’s hard to chase a small kid in a dress and I can’t wear pants when it’s 95 degrees out so I’ve been embarrassing shorts the past few years.
ETA: embracing not embarrassing but maybe I should be embarrassed in them lol
That's what capris were made for. I have multiple pairs of those in varying lengths and rarely wear my one pair of shorts. It gets into the 100s in my area of WA state so it's not cool out.
I push back against capris being a good substitute for shorts lol. Here in Massachusetts it gets so hot and humid. The thought of anything covering/touching my knees is horrifying. Athletic or denim shorts or above the knee Sun dresses are the only things I can stand for most of the summer. Capris only let your ankles/lower calves breath. Not enough!
The shorts conversation reminds me that for the 3 years I lived in Alaska I didn’t wear shorts once and it was THE BEST.
I have a hard time being really minimalist with clothes bc we move every 2-3 years and have lived in all different climates. Before this last move I did go through and purge a ton of clothes that don’t fit anymore or were a good 10 years old and that freed up lots of space which was nice!

Last summer was the first time I fully embraced shorts. I'm plus size and very self conscious, but summer in SC is brutal.
This is a good place to ask. Anyone having a hard time purging items due to Covid? We haven’t really worn any of our business or business casual. I can’t bare to donate when a time may come we need a more professional look. My current role went to smart casual. So I wear a lot of jeans and tshirts.
H did more purging during covid than I did, but we both let stuff go because we didn't love it anymore and wouldn't want to wear it if an event ever occurred that warranted that level of dress. I would keep a couple outfits that you could pull out in a pinch, but let go of the stuff that is out of style or you wouldn't want to wear again.
H and I need to dress up so infrequently now that having 1 neutral outfit is fine. So what if we wear it repeatedly? It's only getting worn 2-3 time a year. No one remembers.

If you have the storage space, after you go through the “definitely donate” items you can take anything in the “not 100% sure yet” category and stick those in a bag or tote. The further away from your closet the better. If a couple of months go by and you’re not missing them, go ahead and donate. (Of course this requires actually going back and getting rid of them, not just leaving them “just in case.”)

I am also baffled by people who don't need or want shorts.
I live in MN and wear shorts outside of work from about May-Oct. Pretty much as long as I can get away with it. Why WOULDN'T I want to feel the breeze on my knees?
Even worse I'm sure lolol, they are all athletic shorts. Mostly Athleta shorts with many pockets that zip. I will see myself out now.

Agreed and I’m wondering if the never shorts people just don’t spend a ton of time outside? Like sure I can wear capris to work in July but if I’m hanging in the yard with the kids you bet your ass I’m in shorts.
I have a bunch of athletic ones too but I got a few really nice “Fancier” athletic shorts from Athleta and Gap that I think look pretty nice. 🤷♀️
Or maybe they all have a dry heat and not the humid swamp where I live. LOL

that’s a good point. I’m in the city with no car so I walk everwhere. Walking miles in the summer without shorts seems torturous. If I was going from air conditioned car to air conditioned inside I would likely make different clothing choices all summer

No you wouldn’t. I play dash from air conditioned place to air conditioned place in the summer and avoid being outside unless I’m in a pool. Shorts or sundress all day every day from April-November.
