I'm in a rut. I always go for the same things, but I want something new. Closet/wardrobe purge has begun, and I feel like I want to try something completely different.
My standard go-to's
Nordstrom - have been hit or miss with their in-person shopping (feel like I'm not able to articulate what I want and/or I get a shopper who I don't click with), has been ok for jersey summer dresses Athleta/Lulu White House Black Market - My go-to for something a little dressier and jeans (of all things) Lands end - their jersey summer dresses are a staple for me and I like their newer sweaters with leggings Boden - again summer dresses
I like dresses/skirts in the summer (but struggle with tops), and leggings/sweaters in the winter, but want to be able to wear jeans (but again, the top struggle).
I don't mind spending money on solid pieces. I haaaaate cheaply made see-through t-shirt type materials. I SAH so don't need a work wardrobe, but want something nicer than athleisure.
I've tried Banana and J.Crew, as I like that look, but haven't had much luck there lately. Looked online at Zara and meh. Also are going on a vacation to Puerto Rico for spring break, and want a really fabulous beachy vacation dress or 2.
I do have my eye on a few dresses from Anthropology. Otherwise I think everything I own is from Athleta, J crew Factory (tees), or Stitchfix (jeans).
I say this every time I look in stores right now. What is wrong with the clothing right now??
I actually bought a few basics from Walmart this weekend. I never shop there, but it was the closest store to grab eggs and they were having an extra 50% off clearance sale (I didn't even know walmart did that). I don't have high hopes for the longevity of these items, but the quality of the more expensive things I've purchased lately has been terrible too. At least these items all cost less than $10 so I won't be as frustrated as I am when $50+ items wear out.
I tend to have good luck at Gap Factory of all places. Also, J Crew Factory is often better than J Crew, IME.
You can try Asos online. I have my eye on a few things. Their FB ads are much better than their terrible website photos that are shot in the most unflattering angles possible, though.
Agolde or AG jeans Monrow tops Frank & Eileen tops Sweatshirts from local surf shop Vince Lululemon Sneakers or slip on mules I like boiled wool jackets or sweater blazers - every other SAHM seems to wear a Patagonia jacket and I loathe. I don’t need the same jacket my kids and husband wear.
I recently put a thredup box together and got rid of all my free people stuff.

I also have the best luck at J Crew Factory out of the stores out there. For vacation dresses I like Lulu’s. But overall, everything is so terrible. Options are either cheap half shirts and 90’s jeans, or Laura Ingalls dresses. I neither want to look like a cast member from Showgirls nor Little House.
It’s like impossible to find a decent wrap dress. Everything is too short for work.
Oh and I also have decent luck at Nordstrom Rack for basics.

Exactly! Pretty much all I can buy these days are basics, which just compounds the problem. It isn't really all the exciting or fun to buy basics.
I've had good luck with Calvin Klein faux-wrap dresses if you can find some in a solid.
You sound similar in style/places as me. I troll saks off fifth and Nordstrom rack online for the designers I like (Rails, Vince, etc. I feel old saying it but I like Eileen fisher for nice basics). You can get really good deals on both sites and it’s easy returns. Evereve is my new favorite - they just had a huge online sale and I got some great, slightly trendier but not crazy, pieces that fit really well.
Oh and for spendier pieces I love Jenni Kayne and Frank and Eileen. They are pricey but really classic/I wear the pieces all the time. Worth the investment.
Listen, at least ONE of us must work in the fashion industry. Explain yourself. Why is it all so bad?
I’m sure it’s because of the fast fashion situation.
And I don’t mind spending more for a solid piece. I have neither the need nor desire to constantly add to my wardrobe.
But for those in fashion - some people don’t want literal throwaway items. I want meant to last a few years, both in terms of style and quality, AND I don’t need them to be labeled “mom jeans,” on purpose. I’ve got plenty of padding down there, I don’t need it labeled as such, and adding volume on purpose. Lock that shit in, and give me something cute and fun, please and thank you.

Have you tried Anthropologie? Oddly I never find anything in their stores to buy clothing wise but I get a lot of their stuff online-I think it’s a better selection as is the case in most places these days.
I also love Shopbop, sometimes revolve, VICI and asos. All online

Where do you find sweater blazers? They are my favorite but a lot of the ones I see are very boxy and I want fitted ones.

One more suggestion-if you have an idea what you are looking for I also get stuff on Poshmark and therealreal
ETA- not sure what kind of splurge you want to make on clothes, but for special occasion summer/vacation dressing, Zimmermann is my absolute all time favorite designer. I’ve bought a lot of their stuff second hand, rarely brand new.
I have found some of my very favorite staple items at Style Encore, a resale shop. They’re super picky about what they accept, and I find myself much less likely to randomly buy something because it’s “close enough.” They’re often brands that are more than I would typically spend on clothes, but second hand is in my budget.

Amazon essentials has nice basic v neck sweaters that remind me a lot of what I bought at loft a decade ago. I have three and wear them every week. Some are starting to pill a tiny bit after two years of weekly wear all winter.
I found one stitch fix top I liked and just bought it in multiple colors because I’m lazy like that.
I really wish I could find jeans I’m happy with. I find a pair I like and wear it till it needs patching. I’ll still wear patched ones on weekends but I don’t like to wear for work
Pretty much all of my pants besides jeans are from athleta
I am yes, but not clothing related. Things are so tough in retail now. People are looking to cancel goods if possible or at least cut the buys back. The demand for discretionary purchases is just not there.
