My job is to train people and 90% time I love it. Today is the 10%.
But! DS had a better morning so I'm hoping he has a good day.
I used to love orienting new nurses and mentoring them.
But our new director refuses to hold the new nurses accountable for when they mess up, and she tells them “it’s because you had a bad orientation.” Or “oh, the doctors are just bullying you.”
And she has ruined these new nurses because they honestly think they can be bad nurses and have scary stuff happen and it’s my fault or the doctors fault.
It’s making me hate my job so much and why I’m going back to school so I can do advanced practice. Because my director is younger than me and even though she’s a bad leader, she’s well networked.
Our new bed is being delivered today! So both bedrooms are a mess right now to make space for the new one being put in. Our old mattress is just against the wall in the 2nd bedroom. My H and I plan to work from bed for the rest of the day after it gets delivered, lol.
My sister is having surgery this morning to get her gallbladder out. I am hoping she will start feeling better right away. It's not 100% determined that that is even her issue (it looks fine on scans) but fingers crossed it is.
I have to run over to the local concert venue today or tomorrow and buy tickets to a couple of shows. Buying them at the box office means there are no fees, which is awesome, but I hate having to go somewhere in the middle of the workday. They are only open from 8:30-4:30 Monday-Friday though so there isn't any other option.
ssmjlm, for my physicals, I 100% of the time leave with a requisition to get bloodwork done, so I always need to schedule it for afterwards.
Also, we are symptom twins. I also get hormonal headaches, and my PCP always recommended Advil (which didn't really work). One time I decided to try Naproxen instead and it's been life changing - I need about 5 pills total each month, the day before my period to the day after it starts.
My acid reflux started when I was pregnant with DS and it just...never went away after I had him. My doc put me on pantoprazole and I've been taking it ever since. It works well.

Kids are off all week and its going to be so long. I'm so jealous of all these other areas near us that have town sponsored activities or after school programs or something! There's one option 20 minutes from us, but outside all day and not sure my kids are up for that in winter.
Just a vent, but sometimes it sucks being a working mom in a town of stay at home moms.

YES. It is amazing to me how this is so systemic. It was the same in my old unit and it became so so so toxic. When I started the average cohort was 6-8 new nurses. When I left it was around 20-40. *bug eyes* All preceptors became burnt out. No one was being held accountable. The nurses were bad and scary. They would complain about their preceptor and the preceptor would then get in trouble. It was awful. I was so burnt out on orientation by the end. I loved having students way more. They're so eager and interested (granted some wanted NOTHING to do with ICU but overall they were such a fun group to have)
I feel foolish asking this in 2023, but...how am I supposed to know when I was last exposed to covid if I live with three people who tested positive on 2/10? I'm trying to be a good citizen and follow the guidelines (i.e., wearing my mask for 10 days since exposure), but they didn't continue testing once we knew they were positive. They're all beyond 10 days (and did test again today: negative), so they get to be mask-free, but what's my deal?
A friend and I are trying to plan a weekend getaway in May, but we haven't settled on a location yet. Any chance anyone here has been to a seaside spa resort in CT that's worth recommending? I'm eyeing Saybrook Point and Madison Beach Hotel, the latter of which is owned by Hilton.
I have a physical this afternoon and other than a very long, not mobile friendly questionnaire (with some really really weird questions on it), no one has mentioned any bloodwork for the appointment. I'm obvioulsy not fasting for a 2pm appointment, but like, doesn't a physical include baseline bloodwork? I really don't want to have to schedule bloodwork after the appointment then wait to get called about my results.
Oh well I'm really only there for my hormonal headaches because OTC isn't working and to ask about my sudden increase in heartburn randomly.
This is so my pet peeve about well visits too! I've switched PCPs a few times in recent years and none of them will do blood work prior to the appt. I asked about it one time and they said it is because they may add more blood tests based on the visit and they don't want me to have to twice. I have no problem going twice and I'd much rather have the initial test results for the basic tests (cholesterol, glucose, thyroid, etc) before the visit so we can actually discuss them! I actually wonder if it is a new strategy to increase their billing, because now if I want to discuss the results of the standard tests after the well visit, I have to make a follow up appointment which gets billed again. It is annoying, both H and I had high test results and the follow up from the dr. was a form letter with generic advice I could get from google.
It's actually to decrease waste and be better stewards. Some of the old providers will order labs first prior to the appointment but it's such a waste for the patient and the facility. Some blood needs to be fresh, some tests can't be add ons. This increases the number of pokes the patient receives (which is always a risk for infection) and it also increases the fees associated.
I'm exhausted. DS(6) was up coughing for most of the night. His asthma meds would help but he was refused to take them thus far. Anyone with tips on getting an autistic kid with sensory challenges regarding taste & texture to take meds? Also claritin can fuck off! They changed their formula and DS refuses to even take his allergy meds now. That was the only allergy med he would even try so while it would be cool if he'd take allegra etc... it's not happening... see sensory challenges regarding taste & texture.
I am getting my hair done this afternoon. I'm looking forward to it. My hair needs to be thinned, cut and I'm getting it redyed blonde.
I really hate when I start what I think will be a simple project but turns into hours and hours of work. Shutterfly is changing their policy on unlimited storage and because I am a weirdo about backing up my pictures in several places, I feel I must now back up the 148 photo albums I have on there.
You have to back up each album individually and if you have lots of photos in that album, it breaks it up into smaller zip files. So one album could have 10+ zip files.
Now mind you I have nothing better to do right now as I am basically bedridden but still, this is a lot of steps.
noodleoo DH's doc does bloodwork before, which is why he asked me. And I was like "IDK haven't had an actual physical in about 10+ years."
momin2013, my obgyn said to see how my ablation affected the headaches and if they didn't go away or weren't manageable with meds, to go to my PCP. They're all the same network, so my notes from him are in there.
I also need a TDAP booster since E is almost 10. Ugh, those always hurt for a good while.

Inhalers definitely taste bad if you get them on your tongue, so I get it.
When I was a kid, I used a spacer with my inhaler. A lot of them come with masks, which I presume he wouldn't do with the sensory issues, but maybe one that still has a regular mouth piece would work?

It's fun when certain clothing brands (e.g. BR/Gap & J. Crew) put the season and year on the tag. I just got a pristine J. Crew boucle jacket on Poshmark from Fall 2009 for cheap. Cha-ching.
I’ve been out of control with online orders lately, I need to cut back. Or maybe I just need h to go back to work so he’s not all “what did you get NOW?”
I’ve been ordering stuff for my Key West trip like I’ve never been on vacation before, lol.

I filled out an online form to schedule a psych eval (for my dd who is dealing with anxiety/ocd that I posted about previously) with a place nearby that has therapists that do ERB therapy, and they called last week to set up a phone call with their nurse to 'take more info.' today at 11:30. It is now 11:45 and they haven't called yet. I'm waiting to eat lunch until after this phone call because I know as soon as I put food in my mouth, my phone will ring. And I have a ton of stuff to do as soon as I'm done with this. But I have a feeling it's not going to happen and I'm going to sit here waiting like an idiot for a while. But I really wanted this phone call to happen so that I could hopefully get dd scheduled for this since dh finally agreed to it and I was hopeful it was a good next step.
My bff has a cottage in Old Saybrook and we spend most of the summer there every year. And Fresh Salt is a great place to eat (another friend's dad is the owner)!

I leave for Barcelona in three days. I am juggling SO EFFING MUCH. And I'm still regularly waking up for 60-90 minutes in the wee hours of the night, no matter when I go to bed, whether I drink or when I take my anti-anxiety meds. So I'm not even resting well even though I'm tired.
I keep telling myself, "if I can just get through X, then I will be over the worst of it". But I've been saying that for like ... six weeks now.
I'm starting to think about my 40th birthday in July. Ideally I'd like to take a 2 week international vacation, but I don't see that happening for a variety of reasons. So now I'm trying to think one week or less and domestic and considering Northern California to see the redwoods. I just want a solid chunk of time in a peaceful, beautiful place.

Today was one of those days where I started my work day with "what do I even do again?" because our weekend was so busy.
Our house is looking better - more put together and I'm loving it.
I'm annoyed H gets to retreat to the office whenever he feels like it - he works hybrid and doesn't have set days, just goes in when he wants to. Shockingly went in today and the kids have off. And he was being all whiny about it. My dude. You don't actually have to go, but you get to go to an office with free flowing beverages and paid lunch, quietness and no kids asking you how to spell "rang" so they can write a novel next to you while you work. But sure - try to conjure up sympathy with me - we'll see how it goes.

Oh, yay! Thank you for mentioning this!
Go for pancakes at Cristy's too! Life changing (especially the banana nut)
Happy Mardi Gras! I’m in a bar 😂😂! Already looking forward to my 3pm nap!
I need a "like I'm 5" explanation of what Mardi Gras is. Is it just bars/drinking/parades for days? I'm sure I could have googled this at some point in my 4+ decades of life.

How did everything turn out for your H's 50th?
It was great! He's very stoic so it's often hard to tell if he likes something or is excited about it, but he seemed genuinely touched by his friends sending cards and gifts and to really appreciate the effort I put in. And he seemed to actually like all of the gifts I got him, so definitely a success! I highly recommend PortraiMe (https://portrai.me/) for anyone looking for a unique and personalized gift. They were great to work with, the collage came out awesome and the in-laws kept asking where I got it and how I did it, etc. It was the #50 gift so I had taken it to FL to give to him on his actual birthday.

With today being Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras, I'm dreaming of the paczki I had when I visited Poland.
We're supposed to get mixed precipitation (snow/sleet/freezing rain) tomorrow afternoon into Thursday morning. We'll see if the kids have school on Thursday. I'm just hoping we don't lose power (I still mainly WFH). Thursday is big day for work - our merit planning tool opens, so it will be a busy workday for me. And if the roads are bad, I won't be able to drive into the office to work from there.
I found out my bonus amount, and the net pay from my bonus is enough to cover our Germany trip this summer (including food). I think the only thing we'll need to save for in advance of the trip are souvenirs.

Did they quarantine and did they/you mask whenever you couldn't be separated? We recently went through this and my husband quarantined in the bedroom and we masked whenever we had to cross paths. I assumed I was clear 10 days after I last interacted with him unmasked.
If they did not quarantine, I think you have to assume you were last exposed 10 days after they first tested positive.

Yeah, my PCP always orders the bloodwork AT my appointment and then I do it afterward. I have to go up to our hospital for that, I can't do it at her office. I assume she'd call if there were any major issues with any of the results and last time she did not.
It does seem like an ass-backwards way of doing it lol but I'm sure there are reasons.
I'm back at work after 20 weeks off. I haven't slept at all in that 20 weeks so I'm surprised I'm not asleep at my desk yet! Pumping in the office sucks. But at least I'm eating lunch at a leisurely pace with both of my hands.
If you had months of emails to sift through, would you start with the oldest or the newest?
