Wins: DH increased his 401K so he’s almost maxing it out finally!
Loss: a new windshield ($1,200 but I only had to pay my $500 deductible) and new tires on my less than a year old minivan :/
Ugh, that sucks (so does the windshield, obviously). I hate that new cars come with such crap initial tires. Mine lasted almost 5 years because I don't drive it much, but it was only like 30k miles.
W: Groceries were $140 (no idea how!) L: Medical denied my claim to reimburse for COVID tests. No idea why. I hate medical companies so much. L: I think we are going to owe a couple hundred for taxes. Boo.

I ran over a large piece of wood because I couldn’t avoid it. There must have been nails in it because both driver side tires had puncture holes in them :/
L: We received notification in the mail yesterday that our property taxes were reassessed and are going up $1k. 😳😳😳 I can't even file a greviance because their assessment of the market value is $3k less than our appraisal three years ago and I'm sure it's actually higher now.
Wins: We’ve been trying not to spend much in 2023 and have been doing very well. We had a terrible experience with a dentist last year so we switched insurance and dentists this year, and finally got a $700 refund for services we paid for that the old one didn’t provide.
Losses: Our rent is going up $200/month in May. Rental prices have gone up so much in our area that 2 years ago when we moved in the rent seemed high and now it is $1000 under market rate. This is the first time it’s been raised so I’m not complaining and I hope they don’t raise it again for 2 more years.

W: we sold my car. We were a one car household for over a year and it worked out fine. H got his new truck in January and I wanted to test out the electric vehicle life before selling my car. Two months in and I only drove it twice so it wasn't sitting untouched. So I got a few offers, they were amazing, and we sold it today. I had some feels about it, though. I had that license plate on every car I drove which was a span of 20 years. I actually cried last night talking about selling it. I also had all my national park stickers on the back so now I need to figure out how I am going to mark my NP visits. Not entirely certain what we'll do with all the money (good problem to have)...

I had 2 madewell shopping rewards and my REI coop rewards came, so I bought a pair of madewell jeans on clearance for $11 and a pair of running shoes for $20. Both were on my list of wants for this month, so I'm super stoked to have so much of my fun/clothing $$ left in the budget.
L: We are in the early phases of planning a first floor remodel that would involve moving and expanding our current kitchen and repurposing the space where the current kitchen and dining room stand into a mudroom and playroom. No additions, all interior remodeling. We just got back early ballpark numbers....$650k to $900k. WUT.
As a potential second phase, we had also talked about expanding our garage and adding an in-law suite above it. Rough estimate is around $1M.
JFC. Am I getting taken for a ride, or is this really the current state of HCOL remodeling?
We looked at adding a 2nd level (adding about 1000sqft) and remodeling our main floor, and the quotes were estimated at around $1M. We are also in a VHOL area.

We are in the process of adding on an 200 sq ft addition so we can expand/remodel our kitchen and we are no where close to these costs. I'd keep looking. We worked with an architect first and were then able to get quotes specifically to those plans. Even with that we saw a wide range of quotes, but nothing close to $650k.

I am sorry, that is such a big jump.
We got our assessment and our property increased. It noted our taxes will go up $570.00. Sadly, I was thrilled because we built a new pole building and increased our value due to significant house interior upgrades. I think maybe the building hasn't hit the assessment yet. Our taxes here in MI are so much less than our house in Texas was, that has half the value of the property and home we have here. I still feel like we won. LOL.

The questionnaire for our tax re-assessment came to our house one week before we built our addition! :-) I expected them to reassess since the plans were obviously filed with the zoning board, etc. but so far they haven't. I did make sure our homeowner's insurance covered the new amount it would cost to rebuild, but they were able to do that without a formal appraisal.
W: DH found out that he is getting a bonus, and it will actually pay above target, so that is money that were definitely not counting on but is a very pleasant surprise. DH and I have been talking about updating the flooring on our main floor in the main living areas and hallways, so we are going to price out LVP over the next month to see if we will be able to afford it with the net bonus.

This week so far: L: dryer died and had to get a new one.. got a decent deal but still.. W: got bonus this week...a little lower than expected but happy I got it Have a dinner out tonight, brunch sun, and lunch Monday so those will be spendy
W: Found out we are eligible for the EV tax credit for 2022 and don't need to wait until 2023. Glad I was slow to do our taxes this year. W: Got back a few hundred for car insurance after the sale of my car. L: Chimney repair is going to be about twice what we were expecting.
L: purchased our family pack of 2024 season passes for the local ski area. Its a huge savings compared to day passes and our DSs practically live there on the weekends and during school breaks so it is worth it but always an outlay of $$$$. W: I am in the process of selling one of my horses so the influx of cash will be helpful.
My toddler potty trained this week! We had just received a subscription box of pull ups that I was able to return unopened... and more importantly I canceled the subscription.
He's still wearing overnight diapers, but this puts a huge dent in our consumption. Despite the short term uptick in laundry it feels good environmentally, financially, and just generally. I have been diapering kids for 7.5 years straight, and I'm really really really ready to stop buying and using diapers.
