Haven't done one of these in a while. How is everyone? I'm going to make another post about potentially leaving HE, so that tells you a lot about my post to come. If anyone has left the field, or is considering I may have some questions (PM) for you.
Hanging in there. It's break this week for our campus so SUPER quiet.
We're still losing really great staff and that sucks. Most of them are leaving due to terrible leadership within their departments.
Will be interesting to see where we end up enrollment wise this Fall - we've been on a decline for a while, some of it due to overall decline in population in our area, some of it due to covid, some due to rising costs and the other general reasons everyone else is experiencing but something has to change that's for sure. But we'll see what shakes out.
I'm trying really hard to get myself hyped up to oversee new student orientation but feeling a little meh about it.
Still hard to hire student staff which is interesting because our campus minimum wage is $14/hour which is higher than most every where else in our area.
I didn't leave highered but I did move from small/medium privates to a large R1 and it has made a huge difference in my personal satisfaction. The resources are better, the culture is better (though that is office specific, I assume), and the hybrid schedule has been more formalized.
Having said that, we are also still experiencing difficulties in getting good quality candidates for our openings.
Overall the school and university are doing really well; our enrollment is down slightly over last year's huge jump, but still up over each of the previous 6 years. My office in particular has 2 out of 3 positions vacant (one promoted out of the department, one moved internationally) so I'm swamped. Hiring is sooooo slowwwww. My whole office is now working fully remote permanently, which I love and I hope that means we'll have a bigger/better candidate pool for these two positions.

HE in England. We had a strike called off last week. It was a strike of all English university staff (my dept are not included). There's a lot of anger about pay, pension & Brexit/Gov't idiocy, etc (all state run schools). My dept (student support/counselling) is actually doing well overall and I'm happy there as we have amazing line managers (bosses) who actually listen and fight for us. The uni has had a huge upswing in numbers of students in the last few years and demand of our services is high, so happy that they've added 8 new counsellors this year. It's making a huge difference.
