Who's the deleted?
I have complex feelings about FL. My family has been there since the early 60s when there were about 3 paved roads in a city that now has a million people, one of the biggest in the state. If my grandparents were still alive, I'd do everything I could to see them. But my personal safety is not at risk. If it were, I'd probably still risk myself to see them. I can understand that internal debate.
But Disney rides?! Fuck that. Tourism to supposedly support artists that are saying no? Nah.
Right now, truckers are refusing to take loads into the state and shelves are bare. And it's not like local crops can fill that gap because, hey, no workers to harvest. Or cook. Fucking Florida.
I have very mixed feelings about that state. My childhood was pretty great, actually, with beaches and no snow and growing up on the water with more canals than venice. But, when I went to college, I only looked out of state (privileged to do so since in state would have been free to me on the actually great lotto funded scholarships, a rare FL victory although kinda worthless with the gutting of universities). I never wanted to return. And I never did except for visits to family.
As a child WDW 5 year pass, back when it was a sane price for residents, it saddens me. But definitely not so much I'd ever return to live or tourist or visit family. Dad can meet me elsewhere.
All I can say reading all this and the news stories coming out of Florida and Texas is I’m so sorry to all those who are directly affected by these laws. I work for an LGBTQ organization and we’ve talked about taking all the flyers and pamphlets we have in storage and papering Florida with them. It’s truly an unjust and unfair time for the community.
Deleting over this thread seems a bit extra. Kind of fragile. Straight-Cis fragility?

Like her comments in this thread I was offended by her comments in the cities thread. There have been a lot of flippant and othering remarks made, and if I were her I would be out of here too.

I think it’s the lack of willingness to face accountability that makes it fragile. Both times she legitimately made offensive and problematic comments and then backtracked or semi-backtracked without really engaging too much with what other posters were saying. It’s not like she is being dragged or anything, we should all be trying to learn here.
I have to admit at the start of this I was like it’s not Disney’s fault that DeSantis is an asshole but whoooboy. I apologize and take that back. Good for Disney for continuing to stand up to him and yes it’s going to hurt the state. I think it has to. Things are escalating quickly and I honestly cannot believe how quickly we are going back in time. It’s sickening.

Maybe, but as she mentioned, she just lost her father and her aging mother lives in Florida, so I can understand being sensitive and somewhat irrational about this right now - she's grieving a big loss. That doesn't change my opinion about tourism in Florida right now, but it is understandable why she would want to see her mom, especially knowing now how it feels to lose a parent. I would guess that the feelings of being called out are too much to deal with right now on top of her grief, and I (personally) give a bit of a pass there. Anyone would be feeling a little fragile right now.
I know of companies no longer hiring in Florida. These actions are important for 2 reasons - to hurt florida so they vote out DeSantis, and to hurt DeSantis's reputation with republicans so he won't get the presidential nod. He is even more dangerous than Trump.

That's fair, I haven't lost a parent. Honestly, I didn't think much of the Disney responses myself until your post, so I appreciate you calling that out.

Even when you know the loss is coming it's still such a gut punch. Well assuming you have a good relationship with your parent. So I would imagine that grief would be influencing her posts here and her reaction to being called out.

I saw about the boycott, but so far none of my FL contacts have mentioned any issues. They're mostly in S, SW and Tampa areas. And of course they can't buy from in the state b/c Deathsantis has destroyed the normal agricultural workforce.
Disney has tanked a massive deal to move jobs, hq to FL.
The situation in Florida is terrifying, and of course not just confined to Florida.
In regard to the deletion- was rebeccawelton a former poster who came back with a new name? For some reason I thought she was, but couldn't figure out her previous screen name (if she even had one).

All this. It's been several comments over a few threads, and each time she came back with a sorry-you-took-it-that-way "apology" and doubled down. It's offensive.
I get that she (or any poster here) might be in a fragile place, but it's not on the rest of us, especially those of us in the communities being directly affected by the types of laws we're discussing here, to let those comments go unaddressed if we want to speak up.
If someone can't grieve without saying problematic and bigoted things, then I'm not particularly fussed about making sure they get to do so comfortably. That's not a burden I'm taking on.

I agree with this, too. It's never the wrong time to point out when someone has said something problematic. This is how we learn and push each other to do better. It's also how we intervene and let the people harmed know we are on their side.
The deactivation is what I have some empathy around - we don't know if she would have reacted differently if she wasn't in the thick of a major personal trauma. I hope she would have.

She did have a previous screen name, I can't recall what it was. She made a new name because of personal issues outside of the board, it I recall correctly.
This guy cannot be our next president. I'm not even in a group he targets, I'm the group he loves (white/hetero/married with kids), and I'm scared. I cannot imagine how those of you feel who he attacks.

I refer to him as DeSatan because he is just that evil.

I called him death santis because of his non response (to put it mildly) to covid. Even my republican loving Florida dad appreciated that name.
If he's losing the geriatric republican Floridians, how does he have a national hope.

DH has a work convention coming up next month that is in Orlando. His work is a generally progressive non-profit organization. They are understandably in a bit of a panic. They book these things 10 years in advance (and there are over 6K attendees, think on the level of the Democratic Convention) so it isn't really feasible to find an alternative location. They have made a series of statements and have planned protests and other events, but it really sucks for those folks that now will not feel safe attending. They are officially no longer having any conventions in Florida. The pool of states they can have these in is getting pretty small.

We had a conference in TX recently, and the organization emailed members about their disagreements with the state. They also organized volunteer work and a list of local organizations that folks could donate to. I donated and it made me feel less bad about traveling to Texas.

I might as well put this here since it's tourist related, and convention adjacent.
NAACP and LULAC have both issued travel advisories to FL. Various tourism boards are now, way too late, in panic mode proclaiming, hey, come spend money here, we're super duper diverse and proud of it. Link might be paywalled.
“Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals,” the NAACP says in its advisory. “Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”
Likewise, LULAC, advised Hispanics — and immigrants, in general — to avoid the state, where “racist” bills signed into law by DeSantis go into effect July 1.
The nation’s oldest and largest Latino civil Rights organization called their censure a “historic warning,” adding that a federal lawsuit challenging Florida’s jurisdiction over immigration policy and a community mobilization effort would follow.

You know how critical I am about travel to these states and Florida is particularly bad but I don’t think they can do much more than this. It is great that they are acknowledging it, recognizing that it was planned a long time ago so it isn’t a contemporary decision, and communicating that. Having a protest and other events is great too. That sort of vocal support goes a long way. I’d also be sure that the statements about Florida include a range of issues - I get frustrated when it centers ONLY on abortion and ignores trans rights, or if people don’t acknowledge the impact on communities of color when curriculum, DEI, and books are banned. It’s a bunch of stuff.
It sounds like there are people who likely no longer feel safe attending and that is a tricky one, but at a bare minimum ensuring there is no professional repercussion for not attending and maybe even putting together something someplace else or back at the company so that they can be included too.
At the very least it’s good at they are feeling the need to address it outright and hopefully are pushing the broader convention (assuming they are not organizing it) to do better about recognizing and vocalizing it as well.

Oh, I don't think they are going to be ignoring that stuff. They are an education organization so it will likely focus on the impact towards school and education. At each convention they vote on their platforms for their year so I think what is going on in FL (and fighting it elsewhere) is at the top of their priority list.

We all know this is exactly what would happen, but Tucker going over there just makes me laugh and laugh. You have to be particularly bad when Fox doesn't want you and even worse if Musk does.

Good news, the DeSantis Twitter thing is apparently going terribly. There is general consensus that it’s terrible but even Fox News is saying so (although they were dissed by DeSantis).
