loira, many people do. I just hate having to carry around umbrellas after so many years. Going on the tube with a drippy umbrella and putting it either on the floor (so it doesn't drip on you) and then forgetting it (did that a lot) or in a backpack which is gross too. After 5 years, I decided less umbrellas. I still have one or two and use them on occasion, but prefer to have a hooded jacket.

It really depends on location and amount of rain. An inch (or more) an hour calls for umbrella. A drizzle is either ignored or dealt with a raincoat. And, no, I don't use an umbrella in crowded situations.
I'm from s Florida, partner from pnw. We used to have this debate often until a trip to se Asia during monsoon season. Even an umbrella wouldn't have helped, not that I travel with one. It was sunny on leaving the hotel and torrential rains by the end of the street, so you just crowded under overhangs with everyone. He conceded a jacket just didn't work. We were completely soaked.
It is interesting that some places I've lived/visited expect use of umbrellas so much they give you plastic cover bags on entry, and hotels just have bins at the entry door.
I hate umbrellas with a passion so I am rain coat with a hood only. I will use an umbrella when absolutely neccesary but generally not. They are annoying to carry and always seem to be in the way. And don't even get my started with "sharing" an umbrella. That is a hard no!
I also hate umbrellas. I need to be able to use my hands! @ Also, if I try to use an umbrella when I'm with my kids it always turns into a huge fight about who gets to hold the umbrella that often leaves me soaked anyway.
I do have a traditional yellow raincoat that is great in the spring and fall, and just wear a jacket with a hood in winter. In the summer I'd usually rather just get wet than use an umbrella.
I’m confused by all of the “hanging outside in the rain” posts. If it’s raining, my dog just isn’t getting a walk that day and my kids’ outdoor activities will all be cancelled. Lol. Rain is why humans made inside.
We do not cancel anything on the account of rain here. Our preschool has head to toe rainsuits with hoods for daily outdoor time. We do get heavy downpours, as well as constant drizzle. Team umbrellas are for standing in the rain. If I am moving, then whatever gear I can wear is enough. My umbrella gets more use as a sunshade than a rain protector.
PNW is very gear snobby and you will be appraised (but not really judged).
