Lumber prices are ridiculous right now. We had to fix a portion of our fence, 14 panels, and it was $5k. Just simple wood fence with a gate.
wut? Standard fence panel is 6x8, right? In my area (HCL) the price is about $70 per panel which works out to about $1000 for 14 panels. I don't know what state you're in or how much labor was involved, but $5000 is high 😕 (the material would make a difference too. I looked up prices for treated pine.)
Guys -- contractors are not your friends. The insurance company isn't either, but they are at least legally required to restore your property to its previous state. That's it.
I'm going to go with #regional. The cheapest 6x8 fence panel in my area is $168. We replaced a 20' section (2.5 panels) last fall and it was ~$1600 including supplies and labour. And our contractor actually is our friend so while we pay him fairly for all work he does for us, he's not overcharging us. We got quotes in the $2400-3200 range for the same project.
If we had to replace 14 panels it would be over $5k for sure.

Exactly. We actually got bigger bids. This company has their own lumber mill so that helped. The price included tear down and disposal of the old fence.
I have read now that lumber prices are starting to go down.
Insurance adjuster says replacement price of $9600, our half would be $4800, less our deductible of $1000, and as soon as we say go, they’ll send us a check for $3800, or if the quotes we get come in higher, they’ll reassess.
We were able to track down who our agent is (we clearly suck at adulting) and they’re going to let us know what impact it will have on rates and decide from there.
The fun news is that yesterdays storm was even worse, so there’s going to heavy demand on fence contractors and we’re not expecting any of them to get to it anytime soon.
