I am traveling to Sofia for a week for work, and decided to double my adventure and turn my Vienna layover into a one-night stay to see what I can.
I will get in around 8am, and leave the next morning at 9:30am.
I’m thinking I’ll want to stay in Innere Stadt to get as much old architecture and mileage in as I can in just a few hours.
And I can either walk it, or get a hop on/hop off bus to roll around and see some sights. It also stops at the Danube.
Any thoughts/advice?
I’ve not been to Europe and want to get as much in as I can if I am flying over! I’m also thrilled about Sofia but I have a whole team who lives there so they will show me around.

I love Vienna and staying inside the ring will definitely make it easy. You can walk almost everywhere, or jump on the tram.
Personally, my favorite part of Vienna is a short train away - Schoenbrunn Palace. It's the summer palace of the Hapsburgs (think Vienna's Versaille), but if you don't want to give up a whole morning, then you should at least check out The Hofburg in town.
The Belvedere is my favorite museum in town - history and art in a gorgeous setting.
St. Stephen's is a must do, but you should also visit St. Maria am Gestade if you're interested in architecture. (Also the Hundertwasser house and the Narrenturm).
In terms of a single day, after living there for a month, this is how I spent my last day (all walking).
Nachsmarkt -> Succession -> Theatre Wien -> Schiller park -> Burggarten/Hofburg->Kohlmarkt ->St. Stephen´s Cathedral->Hoermarkt -> St. Maria am Gestade->Judenplatz ->Schoenlanterngasse-> Maria Theresa Platz

I would stay in the center as well. I have been to Vienna on a 5-hour stopover (train to Budapest) before and I was there for a whole weekend a few years ago.
St Stephens cathedral is a must as is the Hofburg and just wandering around downtown. Eating Sacher torte at Hotel Sacher. Eat a Wiener schnitzel somewhere for lunch. Visit Schonbrunn palace (easy tram ride). To me it kind of felt like Versailles. Beautiful grounds. We didn't go inside the palace but just walked all over the garden.

The last time I was in Vienna, I booked an apartment on booking.com on the Schmidgasse. There was a nice restaurant called Centimeter around the corner and there were several tram lines close by. I would get a 24-hr card for the public transport and just use trams to get around instead of the hop-on-hop off bus.
Adding an update, post trip. I walked 9 miles and got to see everything on my list - the Hofburg, the Habsburg crypt, Stephansdom and many other cathedrals and prominent buildings. My favorite, though, was the tour of the Catacombs below Stephansdom. 6 euros, run every half hour or so, and really interesting! Highly recommend that.
Also the cheese sausage in a roll from a street vendor was the best food I had there. Central Cafe was meh for food, but nice inside.

I just happen to glance at this thread and saw you mention Sofia. We just got off a cruise with a group of friends that all met 10 yrs ago in Italy on a motorcycle trip. One of the couples that they met was a couple from Sofia! They flew over for this trip and I got to meet them for the first time!
How long did you stay in Sofia? Is this a nice city? When driving in Bulgaria, I need to make sure to secure a vignette bulgariavignette.eu. This essential toll sticker allows me to use the motorways and enjoy a smooth journey through the country. It's a simple requirement that makes your travel experience much more pleasant.
