My bff's 40th birthday is coming up in a few weeks. We've technically already celebrated (we took a trip this summer to celebrate all of our 40th bdays this past summer), so her dh isn't planning anything big, just a dinner with their family. But I can't not do something.
Her favorite things to do are go thrift store shopping, dress up, dress up in 80's clothes, look at prom dresses at thrift stores, etc. So I'm trying really hard to think of something we could do where I could incorporate a day of going thrift store shopping for 80's style prom dresses, and then wearing them out somewhere fun. But I'm having trouble coming up with somewhere fun we could go that we wouldn't look insane. There is an 80's prom in our area that our local radio station hosts, but it was earlier in the year already.
One idea I had was a drag queen bingo, and I did search and find one that is happening that we could go to at a synagogue, but pictures from past events show mostly people in the audience in normal attire, and mostly older people too, so I don't know if that is really the crowd we are looking for (plus it is food and alcohol free).
Any other ideas for types of events I could search for for us to do?

This is a cute idea! Maybe research local venues that are popular for bachelorette parties? I feel like they're often themed so you may not stick out like a sore thumb, lol.

I was definitely thinking bowling/glow ball. Usually low lights while also being bright and busy with neon. The “takes all kinds” kind of place where people tend to “stay in their lane” (pun intended)
Are you in my metro area? What about Coop DeVille in the strip? It has duck pin bowling, video games, and a general 80s feel.
I will see how she feels about this place. Even though we are in the general area, we don't venture downtown or any of the trendy places very often, so we aren't familiar with what is actually there beyond the big names, so this is somewhere I've def. never heard of, but looks super fun!
I'd just go to a brewery or something. Who cares if people stare.
I don't want the ONLY event to be eating/drinking just because she has a ton of restrictions with food, so even though she WILL eat/drink when out, she doesn't enjoy the act of it like most people do and it can be stressful for her, so I want there to be something else FUN about going out for her.
Something on theme if you just want to be goofy is roller skating- again, you'd stick out but it'd be on theme.
And while a lot of guests at drag queen bingo are wearing normal attire, the performers would eat up the over the top outfits and give you guys extra attention. I recently met someone affiliated with shows in the metro area and if there are any your direction I can let you know. The bingos are typically fundraisers for various non-profits so they vary on what (food, drink, open bar) is included.
Are there any small venues in your part of the city that have concerts (I am in WML county so there's two off the top of my head here) that may have an 80's tribute band. We went to see Killer Queen at one of the theaters and part of the building turned in to a dance party in the aisles so dressing up would fit right in
I saw a really fun Tik Tok the other day where a group of friends play thrift store bingo - one person closes their eyes, the other counts down, at the end the one with eyes closed grabs whatever their hand is on. They did a round for bottoms and one for tops. There was a $15 limit, and whatever you chose you wore out for the night. They ended up styling their finds and looked so fun and cute - could be a good excuse for some fun thrifting, and then a drink while getting ready.
What about Velveeta in Washington Co April 7? It has been a loooooong time since I’ve seen them but that was always a good time. Eta the venue page isn’t showing it so you may have to do some digging….
klee23, I remember when drinks were sometimes a dollar and I had like ten vodka sodas (they were tiny!) and was stumbling into people. Oh how I've grown since the mid 2000s.
