We need some trees pruned and since one of them I am allergic to. (moved in recently and had allergy testing done shortly after for other issues and that specific type of tree showed up on my allergy report)
Well, I asked them to quote on both pruning and removal option. It’s only a few hundred more to remove it. DH loves the tree (all trees), it’s a mature tree and good for wildlife. So he feels like off we keep it, he’s an arsehole since I’m allergic to it. I told him he would be
We can plant another tree or create a pollinator garden or other wildlife habitats. I understand tearing down a mature tree and replacing it with a small tree is sad.
I’m excited to get the allergen gone and create new stuff in our yard!
One of my neighbors has told me twice now that she's "not going to force (our daughters) to stay friends." Both times it has been kind of non-sequitur, and I feel so weird about it. The girls are friendly, but have never been super close. They have a mutual friend, so have been hanging out a lot over the past couple years, but her daughter is a year older and goes to a different school than mine, so I had no illusions that they were going to be besties forever or anything. Our girls don't have a lot of shared interests and I have always just let them hang out or not on their own terms. The first time she said it was out of nowhere-- we might have been talking generally about our kids, but it definitely wasn't in the context of what good friends they are or anything. But then when she brought it up again, it felt sort of... aggressive? I don't know why she feels the need to be so firm about it.
To be really frank, I don't think my DD or their mutual friend are "cool" enough for this girl (and/or maybe just her mom?). My DD has said that she felt this girl just uses her because we have cool stuff to do at our house and good snacks. DD hates when she comes over because she is destructive, and usually will suggest that they walk to the park or go to someone else's house if the girl shows up to play. DD will not be broken up or even surprised if they don't stay close long-term. Kids drift apart in 6/7/8 grade naturally anyway, but the need to tell me that they won't stay friends, out of nowhere, more than once, while they are still actively friendly, just feels so bizarre.
Last night my 9 year old used the word "sentient" correctly. Just to make sure, I had him define it for me. He was right.
How did he learn this?
Is he into tech stuff? David is and loves learning about AI stuff and that word has been thrown around, I think it even got brought up here. I, myself, just learned the word awhile ago, lol.

Very much so. I bet that's it. Or, of course, books on Taft.
When I asked him what it meant, I did not expect "alive, but not like a tree is alive. Capable of seeing and hearing and thinking about what you feel and logic."

I think we can thank ChatGPT for making AI a part of a lot more regular conversations and the discussion over whether or not it is or will become sentient.

I took today off to do something with kid (shes's on spring break) and she wanted to get acrylic nails again so we did that. She loves stuff like that so she was pumped. The nails look really nice so it was a win. Another plus is this place is walkin only and they are very efficient so we were in and out pretty quickly.
Even though I'm off today I still sat in on an interview for another department on campus and it was painful. I'm very much hoping the other 2 candidates aren't as bad. It's a pretty important department so they need a strong leader so fingers crossed.
Now I'm just hanging out at home waiting for a repair person to come look at our dishwasher. The part that makes heat for the heated dry feature doesn't work. I'm annoyed because the dishwasher is only a couple of years old. Things that are expensive should last longer!!!
I just lost another uncle. He broke his neck in December (right after my godfather/uncle passed) and has been in the hospital ever since. So much loss the last 3 years =(

My 7th grader hasn't had a science teacher since mid January (when the fantastic teacher who replaced the asswipe who blew a ref whistle in kids ears [which wasnt actually the behavior that forced him out] had to leave to take care of her mother). Apparently, one of the other 2 7th grade science teachers who remain is assigning her class "work"- and holy shit, he is a straight up creationist anti evolution loon.
I have never been able to make a good pizza until last night. I used a “Midwest” pizza crust recipe that was in the NYTimes last week and it turned out great. My kids kept remarking that it was the best pizza they’d ever had (a big stretch). I’m the past my doughs were too doughy, or undercooked, and I have always had trouble rolling out dough without in immediately contracting, but this rolled out so easily.
We leave for vacation in a month, and I feel like I have so much left still to do when it comes to figuring out some logistics for our trip - mainly train tickets between cities in Spain.
I did just buy our tickets to the Anne Frank house for when we are in Amsterdam (and I'm also set for the Vermeer exhibit) so at least I feel like I'm covered for the "must see/do" for that leg.
But to add onto my stress my back is acting up again, and I'm worried about getting on a plane and then walking for days and days on end. I had already scheduled a doctor's appointment to take care of a couple of things, so I'm going to see about getting a referral to my PT so I can hopefully nip this in the bud now.

Renfe is the train company in Spain. Buying tickets is incredibly easy. You can do it online but I never have, I just buy at the window or kiosk when I'm there. It's also incredibly cheap and depending on the routes, there are many options per day.
If you need specific help, I'd gladly help you, just let me know.

how common is that type of tree in your area? We did allergy testing for DS1 and he’s very allergic to maple. We have a huge maple tree in our back yard, so I mentioned we would have it removed. Our allergist told us there was no point since maples are so prolific in our area, so removing one tree - even right next to our house - wouldn’t make a difference.

This is what I was told as well.
Unless you can eradicate the trees with at least 1-2 miles, removing the one in your yard is a meaningless gesture.

I had a neighbor actively pushing our kids apart. It was so obnoxious. Like you, I wasn't trying to force the friendship. We were definitely not cool enough for the mom (and frankly I don't think she thinks her own daughter is cool enough for her). They moved to a new house and it was such a relief. We ran into them at the library last weekend and I got to see the mom pick on her kid about food choices. Poor kid.
In your position, I probably couldn't keep myself from a rueful chuckle and saying "Goodness, no. We want them to focus on healthy, mutual friendships, not forced proximity."
I just got stuck in traffic for an hour, I think because of the presidential motorcade.
It really sucked because I left work early because I was in tears over a really shitty interaction with my new boss. It's really obvious that this is not going to work out and I'm going to reach out to 2 levels up from me to discuss and look into other options within my company.

I'm so mad at my H. We're in the Atmospheric River with 50-75 mph winds. Part of our backyard fence fell down, and I'm worried about the dogs getting out. They're greyhounds, so if they get out, they're gone. Fortunately, we have a small dog yard we can let them into, with a not so sturdy fence The co-owner of the fence has been bugging us for years to replace it, but my H didn't want to spend the money, even though we're sharing it with her. When we bought the house, we knew the fence needed replacing, now it will be much more expensive because everything has gone up. New fence won't be in until May 3rd, and I get to worry about the dogs getting out for a month and a half. I really don't want to have to take them out on a leash for the duration.
