Republicans will vote to expel three Democrats from the Tennessee Legislature following gun control protest
Three Democratic lawmakers who took part in protests on the House floor of the Tennessee statehouse will face expulsion later this week.
Earlier Monday, the three lawmakers were removed from their committee assignments and had their badges to the capitol deactivated.
Reps. Justin Jones, D-Nashville; Justin J. Pearson, D-Memphis; and Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville, are facing discipline after supporting protesters pushing for more gun control at the capitol, days after the Covenant School shooting.

That is fucking insane.
Found this more detailed article, including information about what kind of conduct did NOT result in expulsions. Fucking hypocrites. Some @ mentions in the article as well as TW: abuse.
I really feel like this should be a bigger story than "Florida man gets arrested." I'm not dismissing the biglyness of TFG actually maybe being held accountable, but what's happened in TN is bad... and other states (like mine) will likely follow their example.
This should be bigger news, and I hate the orange fuck for being such a big lousy distraction π

Yes, Tennessee might be the first, but I doubt they'll be the last Republican-majority state legislature to try to weaponize their power to oust their Democratic colleagues.
It also did not escape my notice that two of the three lawmakers being expelled are black.

This should be a bigger story:
However, local officials said state legislators angered by Pearsonβs re-appointment could potentially block funding to Memphis. βWe are also being threatened by the state to take away funding, needed funding to run our schools, to run our municipalities,β Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon told FOX 13 Memphis. No legislators have publicly stated if they would do this.
Another commissioner, Amber Mills, told the Commercial Appeal that she would decline to reappoint Pearson because it may result in legislators barring funds from coming to Shelby County.
There was a point in life where I loved being from TN. Iβm now rather glad the accent was teased out of me in college. My HS friends and I talk about how we once had aspirations of retiring back home. Now, we are all glad we left.
I know this is tangential, but itβs about all I can process - how did TN end up here?! (So yeah, I know how, thatβs more the scream into the void) Fun fact - I grew up walking to school right by Randy McNallyβs house, went to his daughterβs birthday parties and such). My father always said he was a fucker.

I agree. I remember being excited to say Iβm from Nashville. Now donβt want to admit it. There is so much fuckery. Iβm ashamed to be American most days too

To join you on this tangent Iβm not from TN by any stretch but having worked in the state on policy for almost 10 years it has been alarming to see how quickly the political dynamics have disintegrated between 2014/2015 to now. Iβd consider TN one of the worst states for political backsliding in the country (Montana is also top of that list.)

Wow, interesting. Obviously not just my perception from afar. I havenβt been down there since my father passed in 2017, and Iβm kind of scared to. I know the last time I drove down, I was concerned about my Obama bumper sticker. And that was probably 2010.
Growing up, Al Gore was my senator (and Jim Sasser). Al Gore people. Sure, he has his issues. But can you imagine him coming from a southern state today?

Iβve always wanted to buy land in Tennessee to build a small house for my parents and an in law type place where my brother, who also has MS, could live. My parents use to vacation right outside Pigeon Forge every year. Now, I donβt know where to go.
I just canβt do it! They act all confused when I tell them Iβm not moving back to Florida or going to Tennessee.

We moved from Boston to Knoxville in Fall 2012, and I remember being struck by how I went from a place where President Obama was revered to where he was reviled.
Sometime in 2015, Trump held a campaign rally in Knoxville. I remember overhearing two old, white guys talking about having gone, and I was like βPeople went to that!?!β Sigh . . .
Now we live in Arkansas (all moves have been work related), and ugh(!) I hate living in a Republican supermajority where the governor doesnβt give two shits about Arkansans just elevating her public profile.

Leaked recording of TN GOP whining that everyone is calling them racist because the one guy voted not expel Gloria Johnson too, while he tries to explain a shred of how law, ethics, and evidence work. They really wanted to expel her to try to hide the racism. As if! Money quote from the whining fuckup colleague: βYou gotta do what's right even if you think it might be wrong.β
really, you just need to listen to it. Too much to summarize.
