Meanwhile George Santos is still in Congress. There is truly no punishment for anyone straight up lying. Elected office is the only place where lying is a-ok.
This should automatically trigger a recall - your constituents voted for you as a Democrat and if you change, you are no longer representing them.
I'm not sure I think it should be automatic. If you were a senator elected in 2014, a reasonable person (ha!) could make an argument for switching from gqp after drumf and fine nazis and everything. I know one, Amash, switched to I just a few years ago. As parties shift, it makes sense affiliations might also shift.
Recall elections have low turnout, so if automatic, it wouldn't take that many people to put a complete lunatic in office. Of course I think there's not a single gqp, at least at the federal level, who isn't a complete lunatic.
I am not in her disrict but nearby. Apparently she has long covid and people harassed her about missing a vote due to her illness. That is what pushed her over.
This is really bad. NC is one of the last havens for abortions in the south. They will now have enough people to override the governor's veto of any anti-abortion laws they pass.
People ask why I left NC all the time. It was bad before but this sets it up to get much much worse. With Cooper unable to stop all the horrible BS that the GOP puts forth in NC, it's going to get much worse. And God have mercy if Robinson wins the governor race next time.
That’s awful! We had a us rep switch parties a year after being elected in nj a few years ago. It was shitty when he did it and is shitty now.
And I was so annoyed that Van Drew got re-elected after that bullshit. Like, he rode the blue wave in 2018 only to pledge his undying loyalty to Trump and still won in 2020 and 2022. Not sure why voters were fine with him being a Democrat in 2018 but then a conservative R in 2020 and 2022.
Her mom is a County Commissioner here in Charlotte. The mom is a also a member of the DNC and the executive council of the NC Dem party,.
The more I read about this, the more bizarre it is. NC people must know better but it doesn't seem like there were hints of this remotely happening. Who's paying her off to do this?

I agree this makes sense, but she was just elected a few months ago so the timing is very bizarre. Like there is something bigger going on.

Right? I think it was all a turnout game on that one. Generally low-interest voters in that part of Jersey showed up in 2018, but not after, which sucks.

From what I am hearing, she did not tow the Dem party line on all issues and was villified by her own party for her opinions. Her children were also harassed by dems. The analyst I heard on the radio thinks she will still vote with the dems on many issues. Sounds like the way the party treated her was poor and she had enough.
ETA she was appointed several years ago to fill the seat of the Speaker of the House that went to prison. So this was not her first stint in the house.

Ah, I hadn't read all that yet.

Her children being harassed is ridiculous, for sure. In that case, I'd probably just become an Independent. I saw that several years ago, she spoke of having an abortion and would not want that choice taken away from others, but given that she's been so embraced by the GOP already I am not sure she's going to vote against her new party when they quickly try to shove through an abortion ban.

Part of me wondered if she intentionally skipped voting and said this as an excuse.
Cotham raised a whopping $54,000 for her primary election – an eye-popping amount. Even for the child of a powerful Mecklenburg county commissioner (Pat Cotham, who made a max-out $5,600 contribution to her daughter’s primary), most state-level corporate PACs do not normally get heavily involved in primaries.
Yet for Tricia Cotham, state PACs – most of them strongly Republican-aligned – mobilized, and wound up funding more than two-thirds of her primary:
I don't know much about her but when I originally heard the news about her switching parties I checked out her Twitter feed. If I didn't know otherwise I'd have assumed that she was already a Republican. Super religious, pro "school choice" etc.

Reviving this thread because thanks to this woman North Carolina's legislature just overrode the Governor's veto on a law that bans abortion in the state after 12 weeks.
