There is so much WTF in here I don't even know what quotes to extract. From the giant budget to only the governor having oversight to how it was last active in WW2. The potential to have a DeSantis controlled paramilitary fighting against civil liberties is absolutely chilling.

I don't care if there are other states guards. I care that this was last in 1947 and recreated so very reently. I also care there's zero oversight.

I can go to any base, buy a shirt, get it tailored with any rank I want. That doesn't mean shit, but it looks like it. I think that's Stan, point. But it's beside the point that these are government sanctioned hooligans under control of one guy. They might as well don brown shirts.

Agreed. And another governor might be given the benefit of the doubt to act responsibly but this guy? Not a chance. He is so, so dangerous.

I was a Floridian breast fed reagonomics and democrat was a dirty word. My dad moved there in the early 60s. Even he took to calling him deathsantis (after an email from me )

So if life long die hards are name calling I question viability.

I also think my dad would absolutely vote for him over someone like Hilary

I have family and friends there and the level of support they’re seeing for DeSantis is terrifying. My other friend flew to CA for a work trip and when a stranger living in CA asked her where she was from, the woman was so excited, “Don’t you just love DeSantis? You have the best governor!” 🤢🤢🤢

Remember, everyone questioned if Trump could be elected. Both Trump and DeSantis are viable. We have to work hard and if Moore vs Harper goes south, I don’t even think that will be enough.

My mom, die hard Republican & initial Stan for DeSantis, also now thinks he’s an abomination of morals & dangerous politician. She is also terrified by the droves of people moving into the state solely bc of his rhetoric. I went to high school with him; he was a prick & a bully then too.

A candidate doesn't have to be likeable to be elected. History has taught us that. Also, with the steps the R party is taking re: voter suppression and district gerrymandering, combined with people's blind faith in any candidate with an R behind their name, they could run the actual party elephant and people would vote for it (and probably elect it).

Thissss. Also let’s be real, if Trump doesn’t win the nomination a LOT of his supporters are going to flock to DeSantis. I know people are trying to be reassuring but these anecdotes are giving a false sense of how much work needs to be done to make sure this man stays far, far away from the White House. Given how comparatively little pushback he’s gotten for his atrocious actions as Governor (he was re-elected after a lot of total nonsense) it is dangerous to assume he isn’t viable.

Somehow his Facebook page shows up on mine and the comments from his supporters are so 🤢🤢🤢. I really hope something happens because he scares the crap out of me. I knew him in college and he was a bully and an asshole then, and I actually think he’s gotten worse.

The same thing happened to me in summer of 2021 standing in line for a restroom at a 4th of July event in North Carolina. It was a long line and everyone was chatting. I mentioned where I was from, and this woman just turned to me absolutely BEAMING and said she was so jealous of me and she just loved him and wasn't he the best! I think I was so shocked I barely responded.

The area I live in has a lot of new developments with serious marketing budgets. We've been growing exponentially for years, but in the past 2 years almost every single person who moves here moves for ONE reason - because they just love DeSantis and want to live in his state. It's terrifying. I've gotten to the point that I barely even make an effort to meet new families that are at our school because I know they are not going to be my people.

A woman I've known nearly my entire life who was my mom's best friend just a few days ago posted about stolen election. Mom was so sick with cancer this woman took on a very involved maternal role. It's so hard for me to reconcile these sides. I can watch footage of the capitol storming and fell every bit of hated for those assholes, but then there's a gentle living 75yo lady saying some of the same lies. In her defence at least she's not openly said anything close to hate speech. But it's that what we've come to? At least she didn't say [insert slur here]
