This was a pretty big story (last week?) about all these military documents the top secret stuff that got out. It appeared to be non-ideological (i.e. intelligence info about both friends & foes) and also very recent (fresh intelligence).
The man behind it is even more bonkers....he was basically spying for months & transcribing everything he saw/read onto his discord channel.
The man behind a massive leak of U.S. government secrets that has exposed spying on allies, revealed the grim prospects for Ukraine’s war with Russia and ignited diplomatic fires for the White House is a young, charismatic gun enthusiast who shared highly classified documents with a group of far-flung acquaintances searching for companionship amid the isolation of the pandemic.
United by their mutual love of guns, military gear and God, the group of roughly two dozen — mostly men and boys — formed an invitation-only clubhouse in 2020 on Discord, an online platform popular with gamers. But they paid little attention last year when the man some call “OG” posted a message laden with strange acronyms and jargon. The words were unfamiliar, and few people read the long note, one of the members explained. But he revered OG, the elder leader of their tiny tribe, who claimed to know secrets that the government withheld from ordinary people.
I haven't finished the article yet. The whole thing is so disturbing. Particularly how like-minded men/boys can create communities of hate and violence online.
It's the guns and the men and their need to control and destroy.

CNN- A member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard was arrested on Thursday in connection with the leaking of classified documents that have been posted online, according to a US official familiar with the matter.
The arrest of Jack Teixeira, 21, comes following a fast-moving search by the US government for the identity of the leaker who posted classified documents to a social media platform popular with video gamers.
How does a 21 year old kid have access to highly confidential documents? And not only access but the time to copy/steal/photograph them during work hours?
This really makes me worry about our national security.

This is not uncommon in the military. This individual wasn’t untrustworthy because of his age, he was untrustworthy because he was a douchebag. Not all 21-year-olds are douchebags. Many honorably serve and die for their country, and their duties require access to classified materials.
THIS individual probably didn’t have a need-to-know that specific information, and he shouldn’t have had access to it. But that doesn’t mean that all 21-year-olds in the military are untrustworthy.

This whole story is so wild to me. Like, I can’t believe this stuff was circulating in some small random internet community (full of toxic young men, sigh) for months before one of those idiots posted it elsewhere.
Anecdote, I was accidentally included in an email thread from some Army division dealing with drug enforcement. I repeatedly emailed everyone on the list asking to be removed because there was a typo which caused me to be included. At least twice there were emails marked confidential that I received. It took months for them to finally stop coming. It was ridiculous.

I'm not bad dingo, but I agreed with her comment because I took it to be how could it be that a 21 year old person, presumably fairly junior, have a need to know (and therefore sanctioned access) to so much information in the normal course of their duties.
Like, she's worried our that our document control/infosec is shoddy, not that our military is full of kids (which it is) and therefore we're doomed because young people suck (which they don't).
It seems as though he had IT access, which depending on where you are working can give you very broad access to information. I think it is a fair point to look further into how IT staff security clearances are established and their activity within secure document folders supervised.
And there you go...MTG and Tucker Carlson are defending him.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) hailed Teixeira as “white, male, christian, and antiwar.” The “real enemy,” according to Greene, is the Biden administration waging war against Russia. (Your occasional reminder that Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) famously appointed Greene to the Homeland Security Committee.)

My (admittedly second-hand) understanding is that classified information is usually siloed, and that having a secret clearance doesn't give you carte blanche to access all classified information, just the information that would be relevant to your particular job.
It seems like he was able to access a fairly wide array of information, and was apparently able to take it home, so finding out how that happened and ensuring it doesn't happen again in the future is important. I imagine the Feds will have questions for his superiors.

This dude is a white supremacist, anti-Semite, gun fetishizer. Of course they're going to kiss his ass; he's the poster child for everything they love.

I'm glad this guy was apprehended because he sounds like a mass-shooter in the making.
He had an interest in mass killings, per his online activity, and had amassed an arsenal of weapons in his home.
Prosecutors pointedly questioned Airman Teixeira’s overall state of mind, disclosing that he was suspended from high school in 2018 for alarming comments about the use of Molotov cocktails and other weapons, and trawled the internet for information about mass shootings. He engaged in “regular discussions about violence and murder” on the same social media platform, Discord, that he used to post classified information, the filing said, and he surrounded his bed at his parents’ house with firearms and tactical gear.
Airman Teixeira was also prone to making “racial threats,” prosecutors said.
This behavior — so disturbing it was flagged by local police when he applied for a firearms identification card — is certain to raise new questions about how Airman Teixeira obtained a top-secret security clearance that gave him access to some of the country’s most sensitive intelligence reports.
