For me...when the pain wasn't as bad as I anticipated ...I had some adrenaline shaking. Try not to get too amped up. As others have said, it's more like a scraping, very bearable just be calm
I have six tattoos on my arms. The worst part of my first tattoo was literally the moment right before the artist put the tattoo machine on my skin. The anticipation was difficult but once he got started, it was no big deal. To me, tattoos feel irritating and after awhile you just want it to stop. It's uncomfortable but it's never felt unbearable to me.
If you need a break during the process, tell your artist. They want you to be as relaxed as possible. As for taking Tylenol before hand, I wouldn't. You do want to make sure that you've had a snack and are hydrated. But ask for breaks if you need them. Your artist won't mind.
Thanks everyone! I did it tonight. The artist was super nice and he did exactly what I wanted. It did really feel like scrapping and was uncomfortable but not terrible. He said I did great. The shading of the butterfly prob hurt the worst but that was at the end and didn’t last long. It only took about 40 mins in total so I didn’t need a break. Here’s a pic!
Jalapeñomel - thank you! I’m not in a rush, and would much rather wait for someone experienced with scars than to mess it up because I got carried away with the idea.

That's so cute!
Also, after reading the comments I'm starting to feel like a wimp because my tattoos have been pretty painful. My back piece was tolerable for a while, but around hour 3.5 I almost tapped out, lol. I also had to split my half sleeve into two sessions because I wouldn't have been able to do it in one sitting.

Mine were painful too! I'm working on my sleeve, and it's gonna take me a while!

You are definitely not a wimp. Mine only took about 40 mins and I was ready to be done. No way I could sit for 3.5 hours!

My one tattoo took about ten minutes and I was over it approximately 1 minute in 😅 I'm still debating if I want another because I guess I have a really low pain tolerance, I hated it!

underwaterrhymes Have you considered getting a zipper? I have a large scar from right under my sternum to my bikini line and I’m bringing a zipper or cut-along-the dotted-line scissors ink inspo ideas to my artist next week.

I’ve seen some cute zipper ones, but I’m really drawn to flowers. I’d love to see what they wind up doing for you, though!
