It sounds like Bernie is going to do the right thing. I hope he's able to rally his fan club to vote for Biden.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said on Thursday that there weren’t “many alternatives” for him beyond forgoing a 2024 presidential run and backing President Biden’s reelection.
“I don’t think one has many alternatives,” Sanders told MSNBC. “What’s at stake is the future of American democracy.”
Sanders said on Tuesday that he would not launch a competing bid for the White House in 2024, just hours after Biden officially announced his reelection campaign.
Yeah, not to pile on, but saying that he’s done more than past presidents is a pretty low bar.
My general point is that there is not a mainstream candidate that would be doing anything different than biden on these issues. In fact, there's clearly no other option right now which is why we are here. A lot of the horrific stuff going on across the country in red states is at the state level, which we all know.

I am not personally excited about Biden. Although I think he’s done a fine job in many areas, he’s disappointed me greatly in others.
However, he is going to be the D candidate. And I am going to rah rah the fuck out of him and do what I can to make sure he’s elected because the alternative is losing our democracy.
I know it’s not a great space to be in. I know people don’t want to have to hold their noses and vote for someone who not only doesn’t excite them, but also isn’t moving forward on important issues. But every single person who cares about democracy needs to vote for him because that’s truly what’s on the table.
For what it’s worth, I know most everyone in this thread will when it comes down to it and I think it’s important to point out his flaws and I’m glad it’s being done here. But I’m worried about an unmotivated and/or uninspired Democratic populace. This is an area we need to be like Republicans. For all their flaws, they rally around the candidate. In a world where there isn’t a two party system, this wouldn’t be necessary, but that’s what we have. And even if Biden isn’t my first or even my tenth choice, I’m going to act like he is when it comes to getting him elected.

So I'm supposed to thank a republican now? For denying science and really messing up my teacher friends. Oh, and making more that half my nursing cohort quit. One friend wore her dad's landscaping face shield to work. They had to wear masks 3 days when previously we trashed them every time we entered a room.
This thread took quite a turn.
And, yes, they're still enforcing masking in certain settings, and I'm a ok with that.
Urgh- these numbers are just terrible. Who the hell is voting for Trump over Biden? Also, who the hell are these undecideds?? It's not like you don't know who the candidates are..
from axios.
Former President Trump leads President Biden by 7 points — 49% to 42% — in a general-election matchup in a Washington Post-ABC News poll out today.
44% of U.S. adults polled said they'd definitely or probably vote for Trump vs. 38% for Biden. 12% were undecided. Biden's approval hit a new low — 36%, down from 42% in February. Why it matters: Biden's re-election campaign is already trying "to shift voters' focus away from their reservations about him and instead make the 2024 general election a choice rather than a referendum," The Post notes.
On mental acuity, 94%of Republicans, 69% of independents and even 21% of Democrats said Biden lacks the sharpness to be president.
"Just 32% overall think Biden has the mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president, down steeply from 51% when he was running for president three years ago," ABC's Gary Langer notes. 54% think Trump has the needed mental sharpness. On physical health needed to govern, just 33% think Biden, age 80, has it — vs. 64% for Trump, who's 76.
58% of Democratic-leaning adults want to nominate someone besides Biden.

Well this is just depressing. Hopefully Biden can turn things around and i know it's early and anything can happen, but....fuck. I'm nervous.
I get that it sucks that his approval rating has gone down and that 58% of dems want a different nominee, and many of us agree that we think he's too old to lead, but that's not the same as people who are actively planning to vote against Biden.
I'd also venture to guess that the people voting for Trump will NEVER indicate that they disagree with him in anyway, age, politics, etc.
Biden needs to take a hint and endorse someone else. 58% of Democrats want someone else. Accept it and move on old man.
I get you, but there is no way in hell that's going to happen. He's the incumbent with everything that goes along with that, good and bad. He's going to be the D nominee.

If he says "I'm retiring" - is that bad for the Democrats? I feel like both the crazy MAGAs and the reasonable Americans can agree that at 82 it's ok to retire and go sip umbrella drinks by the pool.

Well the cat is out of the bag given he's already announced his campaign, so to backtrack now would for sure look bad. Even if he HADN'T announced yet, I think the idea is the incumbent ALWAYS runs for a second term unless there's a pressing or unusual circumstance not to. Literally the only President I can think of who did this was LBJ. His popularity was in the shitter due to Vietnam, and I believe Bobby Kennedy had already announced his intention to run and I think it was felt the Dems would be all in on him. I don't think being 82 is the same circumstance.
My biggest issue with Biden running again is that Harris has been virtually invisible during his first term. She should have been much higher profile and even more in a second term.

Maybe he will get sick or die. I hope they have a back up!

If he said that now? Yes, I think it would be very bad for the democrats. They’d look leader-less way too close to the election. He has exercised presidential power in too traditional of a way to do that.
If right after he was elected he’d decided that he was going to be a 1-term president, if he’d given Harris SIGNIFICANTLY more power and visibility than a normal VP, if they’d planted Op Ed’s that they were basically equals in the White House rather than a #1 and a #2 in charge and behind closed doors made crystal clear to the democrat leadership that she was heir apparent and they’d all better get in line without an ounce of dissent because they were all going to be kingmakers to the first black female president? I think maybe that could have worked, and that’s what I hoped would happen. But that ship has sailed.

It wouldn't have been bad if it were 2 years ago and the Ds had been able to rally behind Harris or literally ANYONE and raised their profile. But at this point? I'm the furthest thing from a political strategist, but it feels too late to pick someone else (even the VP because she's been (made?) invisible) to put forward as the nominee.

Harris has been so invisible that I think even this would be devastating for the dems at this point.

I agree, this would have been so much better. It sounds so practical. She could have been the first female black AND South Asian president.

Uh, this is a weird take.
That an 80+ year old man working an incredibly stressful job who runs around with out a mask during Covid might get sick or die? The odds aren’t in his favor.
But I have no idea if they are have a backup, Democrats seem to just keep working until death and while in extremely poor health lately and no one seems in any rush to replace them or figure out what will happen when the predictable event happens.
That’s what makes it’s so strange Harris hasn’t been more front and center. I think a lot of people didn’t think he’d make it through his term much less run again.

It’s really hard to know! Most people I know who voted for him voted because there was no other option and even at the polling station people in line waiting to vote were talking about how he probably wouldn’t live out his term and we’d have President Harris. No one was thinking he was going to want to run again!
If they don’t want to back her for whatever reason, they should have been looking for someone else and building them up. Once again, we are dropping the ball.

Speaking of....Feinstein returned to DC and should be able to work a bit & hopefully get some stuff through the judiciary, although the still looked VERY ILL.
It’s not ageism to accept that being elderly during Covid makes it more likely you are going to die, know he is past the average age of death in our country, that he works a grueling job for anyone at any age and to think that maybe if you are the president, you should be thinking of your country and the people who elected you first.
Democratic Party voters don’t want him to run and we are given no other options.

Fingers crossed but it’s tiresome we seem to be in this position again and again. It’s okay not to work until death and to think about setting the party and the future up for success in your absence.

Not really. He's been vaccinated with all the recommended shots, plus he's already had covid. Your hope that he dies by covid most likely isn't going to happen.

This. Granted, I'm sort of small c conservative in my own life in a lot of ways and really don't like change (again, personally) but I'm in favor of Biden running if only because Ds would lose any incumbency advantage to drop him. Do we really want to go through a primary with another 23 candidates vying for the nomination? Fight about the primary calendar with SC starting it off instead of Iowa? Waste time and money and ammunition on each other instead of on Trump/the GOP? There ARE upsides to having Biden run in 2024.
