Why intellectually I get that there is a group that just doesn’t care and wants to burn it down, no matter the fallout.
But then, I just don’t get how people get to that point. Of being a member of congress a not giving a shit about the continued functioning of our country.

I used to think that they were just being provocative. Now, I am sure that they lack critical thinking skills so badly that they think destroying democracy will result in a much better democracy which favors them and their interests. It won’t but they lack critical thinking skills …

I agree with this. I really think that some of them are dying to have this happen on Biden’s watch because they think it’ll increase their chances of sweeping victories in 2024. Short term loss, long term gain. And honestly, in some ways, I don’t think they’re wrong about that…but I also think that they have no real grasp on just how awful this will be for basically every single person in the country.
I have also yet to hear anyone give a decent answer to why raising the debt ceiling multiple times when Trump was in office was OK, but now suddenly, it’s a HUGE problem. But again, that would take critical thinking that I don’t believe quite a few of them possess.
I guess what I mean is that I just cannot imagine how one gets to the mental logic needed for all of this. I mean, I’ve heard/read/etc the arguments and thinking. Just it’s so far from logic my brain can’t even try find … well… anything.
"The fact of the matter is that this bill is totally unnecessary. The President has the authority and the ability to eliminate the debt ceiling today by invoking the 14th Amendment. I look forward to the day when he exercises this authority and puts an end, once and for all, to the outrageous actions of the extreme right-wing to hold our entire economy hostage in order to get what they want."

The 14th amendment hasn't been invoked in this context, ever. As I read it, if the 14th is invoked now it would face immediate legal challenge that would go to the courts. Since it's brand new territory, and the default date is Monday, no one has wanted it to get to that point. It's one of the few things that there is no legal precedence for.
