Depends on the shoes. Especially when I wore heels to work, those suckers came off when I drove.
Weirdly enough, the article mentions that you can drive without shoes in Colorado, but google tells me there are no federal or state statues against it, but that some cities or towns may do otherwise.
I feel like my parents once told me it was illegal to drive barefoot when I was a kid, and I must have believed it, because I never tried it. I have definitely driven in sandals and flip flops though.
This seems super dangerous. I've done it once or twice but mostly to move the car into the garage, out of the garage, etc. I've never actually driven anywhere without shoes on.

Ditto this.
But in the summer I drive in flip flops probably 90% of the time.
I think flip flops are more of a hazard than driving in bare feet because they can get stuck/caught on the pedals.
I drive in flip flops all the time (including driving a manual for the several years) and this has never once happened to me.
I broke a pair of flops because it DID happen to me and I panicked. I yanked my foot so hard the strap broke. I'd somehow gotten the brake bar between my foot and the brake.

No. I’ve been tempted because I’m wearing a walking boot on my right foot and it’s soooooo annoying to switch my shoe and boot every time I go in and out but I actually put my bare foot on the pedal and was like “Nope nope nope.”

Same here, I truly thought it was illegal.
I wear flip flops almost exclusively from May-October, though, so drive on those most of the year and have never had an issue.

I LOVE being barefoot and have no problems walking on rough surfaces with bare feet, but something about the pedals in a car give my feet the heebie-jeebies.

This is the only time I drive barefoot, when I'm wearing flip flops. I slip my right one off to drive.
same. Heeled shoes also have to come off to drive - even a knee high boot. I've tried before and the heel stuck in the carpet as I was shifting to brake. Sheer panic 😬
I’m so dumb because I don’t know how flip flops would get stuck on a pedal.
Sincerely, Started driving at age 32
Yeah, I feel like I must be wearing different kinds of flip flops or something. I've been driving in them for ~30 years, most of that with a manual transmission (so an extra pedal) and never had an issue.

Well, huh. Now I want to know how many cars have carpet below the pedals. I think all of ours have had rubber mats.
I live somewhere where you wear flip flops or sandals most of the year and I specifically take them off to drive barefoot because it feels safer and more comfortable than having them postentially slide off/get stuck under/slip on the pedals. I just checked and it is legal to drive both barefoot (and also with flip flops) where I live
I voted no, because I’ve never driven barefoot on the road.
I did practice driving stick shift barefoot in a parking lot because someone said it would help me learn the feel of the car and when to shift. It really did work well for me.
