The head of the UK’s leading republican movement and other organisers of an anti-monarchist protest at the coronation have been arrested on King Charles III’s procession route.
Graham Smith, the chief executive of Republic, had been collecting drinks and placards for demonstrators at the main site of the protest on Trafalgar Square when he was stopped with five others by police on St Martin’s Lane in central London.
The group had been walking behind a rental van containing hundreds of placards when they were approached by the police and searched.
Harry Stratton, a director at Republic, who arrived as Smith and the others were detained, said: “They were collecting the placards and bringing them over when the police stopped them. The guys asked why and they were told: ‘We will tell you that once we have searched the vehicle.’ That’s when they arrested the six organisers.
“We asked on what grounds they had been arrested but they wouldn’t say. It is a surprise as we had had a number of meetings with the police. They had been making all the right noises.”
(It's illegal to arrest someone without telling them why, so this is even worse)
The coronation service has been changed to tone down the controversial “homage of the people” element of the service.
It comes after a widespread backlash against the idea, in which the general public was invited to swear allegiance to the king during the coronation on Saturday...
In the original announcement, Lambeth Palace said it hoped people watching the coronation at home or in public venues such as parks would say the words: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to your majesty, and to your heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.”
The suggestion of the homage of the people received widespread derision, with many saying such an oath of loyalty was more appropriate to feudal times than the 21st century. The campaign group Republic called the idea “an offensive and tone-deaf gesture that holds the people in contempt”.
Personally, I'm pissed off that we're the only country that puts this much money into a coronation and that they kept upping the budget more and more, at a time when people are really struggling to put food on the table. It feels so out of touch and a try to move back to the feudal times (which the Tories have been pushing).
I wasn’t planning to watch, but it is literally the only thing on TV right now, so I have it on in the background while I grade finals, snuggle my cat, and drink my tea.
The whole thing seems very out of touch. The commentators keep saying how “modern” it is. I guess relatively speaking, it might be more modern than coronations of the past. But it seems very dated to me.
Is it true that Channel 4 is showing nothing but documentaries about Royal scandals as the alternative programming? I read about that last month but didn’t see anything more recent.

I turned on the news while getting ready for the day due to mild curiosity about the coronation. I burst out laughing after seeing him in his costume. it all just seems so ridiculous. granted, if it was a ritual ceremony in a non-western country, I would have had a different reaction. But I feel confident that no one here will flame me for laughing at Charles. I can't even bring myself to call him King Charles.

I didn't watch but did look at some pictures after the fact. I agree it looks like Charles was in costume (and many others). I'm a way, I think that's actually true!
I didn’t watch but I saw Andrew was wearing ceremonial robes. Yet another reason to hate the royals.
I only caught the end, on the balcony. But those robes! OMG talk about a throwback to medieval times. I thought of Kate and how she always looks so impeccable, and here she was in a blue and red robe made for medieval body ideals (of which, I appreciate).
we turned on premier league soccer, called it football, and figure that was or British. Plus the quiche, because I love quiche.
I watched a rebroadcasts when Charles III walked in and did all the things and got the crown. I was surprised that his responses/part seemed a bit unprepared?
A council has said it is “deeply concerned” at reports that three nighttime safety volunteers were arrested while handing out rape alarms in Soho the night before the King’s coronation.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers had seized “a number of rape alarms” in the early hours of Saturday over fears they could “disrupt the procession” as the King made his way to Westminster Abbey.
These people hand out these alarms every weekend and do good thing for women. This is out of control.

It feels to me like they failed to consider how much things have changed in the 70 years since QEII's coronation, and how much the whole thing seems like an anachronism in the world of today.
A modernized and greatly scaled-back ceremony might have engendered some better feelings with the public, but self-awareness has never seemed like a particularly strong suit for the BRF.

For some reason, most of my news feed is guardian, independent, and a bunch of british tabloids. Yes, I do occasionally use a british vpn, but not as much as other countries.
Anywhoosers, it was certainly an interesting mix of how dare they and how dare meghan.
The whole country swearing fealty to king and heirs, which includes Andrew, nevermind the god part, is fucking disgusting.
And then there's the cost. Feudal is the only word I can think of. People go cold and hungry all so the king can have his party to honor himself.
I'm sure there are royalists who'd say this is so american of me, but, yeah, it is. So what? I've met many members of local royal family, and the only reason I know is because someone literally whispered to me. No fucking grandiose party to announce it. Just hanging out, having some beers at the "royal yacht club" which is no fancier than basically long john silvers, membership not required.

She can't win. If she had gone, the very same people criticizing her for not going would have made up endless reasons to pick her apart (she stole the spotlight, she didn't behave appropriately, she upstaged Kate, her hair was messy, yadda yadda yadda)
I hope she spent a relaxing day in California being supremely unbothered by the Royal Family, the British media, and everyone determined to hate her.
I wish we could have seen Kate’s full dress without the cape over it. I actually liked the headpiece.
It was cute that Kate and Charlotte were coordinated with the headpieces, but also, Charlotte’s outfit kind of gave off Handmaids Tale vibes. Lol.
It’s amazing how much Charlotte looks like young Elizabeth.
I think it was likely similar to the white gowns that Camilla and her ladies in waiting (I’m assuming that’s who they were?) we’re wearing. Which definitely gave off handmaiden vibes.

Okay, so this is sort of Coronation-adjacent. Remember how there was hemophilia in the British Royal Family, and then Queen Victoria's children married into all of the royal families in Europe and spread around the hemophilia? And then that's how it got into the Romanov bloodline? Why do we no longer hear about this being a concern when royal households start families? Is it because they no longer marry their cousins?

Yeah, from the pictures I saw, the floral headpieces were lovely.
It’s a bit odd though, right? To wear a sparkly head piece when you can’t wear a tiara? Seemed very “look at me”, and to make sure photos of her and Charlotte upstaged photos of Camilla. Megan would have been ripped to shreds for doing something like this.

You think those headpieces upstaged this?
100% yes. Kate looked like a true princess bc she is basically wearing a tiara that’s not a tiara. Her photo is everywhere. Camilla looks like she’s wearing her MILs old hat.
If Kate had worn an actual little hat or headband, I think Camilla’s photos would be more commanding . But mother/daughter matching headpieces? Come on, you can’t top that!

I mean, in the sense that the headpieces were lovely and the coronation hat looks ridiculous, sure. But I don't think there was anyone there that didn't understand that the ridiculous looking hat on the King's wife's head was the important thing, not the headpieces of the princesses toward the front of the crowd.

Probably partly because they can marry commoners now and partly because things like hemophilia are very treatable with modern science.
