Colorado had the same thing for about a week last month. It's bad when you're under it. Make sure you run your HVAC system every once in a while, even if it's the heat, to run your in house air through the filter if you don't have stand alone air purifiers. It helps a lot.
Today was the first clear day (northern lower Michigan) we’ve had in a few. Air quality alerts have been on since the middle of last week. Plus it’s incredibly dry here and extreme fire danger warnings are in place due to drought here too. We have fires a couple of counties over in state forest land I believe. The sun was that hazy beautiful pink due to fires on Saturday and it looked like a mass of fog hanging over the lake. I’m so sad for the people and animals in danger and affected. Stay safe everyone.

We just ordered two, unrelated to this air quality, but I’m glad I did. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I have one in just about every room we live in at this point. We have poor air quality days so frequently that I figured it was a good investment.
I'm in Northern MN for the week and it has been horrible up here the last two days. I don't suffer from allergies or asthma and even I am having a hard time breathing.
I’m in Ottawa. Our AQI hit 11 today which is apparently above the chart. It was apocalyptic looking for sure, and not something that we’ve ever really dealt with (we cracked several records related to the smoke). All of the local fires appear to be under control or self limiting, but the fires in Northwestern Quebec are pretty big and those are in large logging regions. Because of the Ottawa valley we tend to get air trapped here, and this also hit during peak tree pollen season. Folks with asthma are in full on hiding and I don’t blame them. I’m hoping the fires are able to be controlled soon and that we get some more rain.
Lurker here but I’m in Canada about an hour north of Toronto and the air is awful and you can smell the burning. It’s so dry here and it’s not supposed to rain for a while. I’m not looking forward to this summer. It’s scary.

I’m in Peterborough and it’s bad and supposed to get worse.
A few years ago during our orange days, a neighbor bought the highest quality filter you can get - and then sealed it with tape to their open window so they could still get a breeze. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try it, but I'll pass the idea along.

Did they actually feel a breeze? This might be one of those "it sounds good on paper" ideas. LOL!

lol, Yeah - I have no idea. They are a young, very creative DIY couple so it was right in line with some other things they've done

I’m heading to Kingston tmr and dreading it. I don’t have my inhalers. It’s really bad. I hope it rains some tonight. I’m in Toronto and it was pretty bad yesterday with the smoke smell and the haze.
I'm in NORTH CAROLINA and our air quality is shit today and they're telling people to avoid being outside. Yesterday was hazy but not terrible from the smoke.
I ran this morning and just had a scratchy throat afterwards, but MH was hacking after going on the porch to close windows.
In upstate NY it was terribly hazy today, and it smelled strongly of smoke outside. My eyes burned.
We had a thunderstorm roll through which helped, but IDK for how long.
I remember smoke like this once before, when there were wild fires on the west coast, but it is really apocalyptic feeling.
Same here, but no rain. my kid was going on a field trip today on the Miss Buffalo (a boat) just received a text that all field trips are cancelled today due to the air quality. other schools were cancelling outdoor activities.
I'm in IL and we had some smoky days last week and also over the weekend. Not nearly as bad as what the NE is getting. Hazy, and unhealthy for sensitive groups outside. I noticed my eyes burning and I was coughing a lot more outdoors.
I had no idea it wasn't just my own head until I saw this post, but it for sure smells smokey here in DC this morning and it's a bit hazy. We had this once before this year and the smell makes me nostalgic for travel to countries that burn their trash. It's weird but I love the smell.

I know anything besides masks with actual respirators won't do jack shit but I did feel better wearing a mask (well, two) when I had to be outside briefly, even if it was just a placebo effect.

N95s help and I'm guessing people have a few of those around.
I'm struggling with how the news and social media suddenly seem to care. Y'all, how do you think people in the west feel 6 months out of the year? Can we now give a shit and stop our climate killing ways? (All this is general and not meant specifically for anyone here.)

It wasn't a placebo effect, N95 and KN95 are both equally effective against smoke (and the Covid still floating around).

I'm more baffled by how this is the first time in my lifetime that I've experienced this. It's not like the Eastern part of the continent doesn't have forests, or dry weather, or stupid humans. Yes, weather patterns are playing a role here and the winds just blow how they blow but have we really been that lucky that the wind never blew this much wildfire smoke this way until now? I know western smoke has made its way here but still, I'm just shocked that this hasn't happened here more often (but I know it will).

Can someone explain what AQI means? I'm in Boston and it looks much better today (they said on the news the smoke is moving west of us). But the AQI in my weather app is around 80 and says it is worse than yesterday. I didn't check the number yesterday but we had orange skies/sun and it looks much better today. I'm so confused! Is in the 80s bad like we shouldn't be going outside? I turned on our AC to circulate and filter the air and all our windows are closed already since its been cool again.
Velar Fricative , agreed. I never remember thinking about this in NE before the past few years.
