I have used Twitter and it has fallen so far from what it was and is so dark. I have a threads account and the overall vibe is definitely more of what I've been looking for since the twitter takeover. The platform WAS great so I find it brilliant that those developers are now with threads, I'm here for it. Access to celeb content, current events, lifestyle stuff, mix of fluff and real time stuff. I also love the idea of E losing his mind over this. Makes it all the more satisfying to use it.

I watched a video by a person who studies the psychology of social media platforms. She estimated it would take off because all the Twitter users who hate what Elon has done to the platform are jumping ship. And since most people use Instagram to represent who they really are in real life, and their Threads account will be linked to the Insta account, they expect the platform to be a much friendlier and less troll-ridden place to exchange ideas.
Instagram isn't a great platform for exchanging short commentary - with Twitter nose-diving, there is a missing place for that. So Threads will offer that. It should basically be a lot like Twitter was before it went to shit.
Edit - another commenter indicated that Thread not having a computer interface will be a limiting factor for it though. I don't know how much of that is true, except limiting older users.

<insert I am tagged in this and I don’t like it meme>
I was listening to an interview this morning about it...I think there's a big hole for something to replace twitter, whose coffin is being nailed by Elon at the moment I actually hope it succeeds. All the big, high-profile names on instagram were pushing it yesterday & Today.
PROS you can port/transfer your followers from IG and not have a new sign-up or start over from zero if you have a following already established it's set up and aimed for text based dialogue (like twitter) so it will have a different use groups that appeals those wanting more interactive discussion vs. just seeing photos/video it's open source, so eventually, you can take your info/feed/data/followers and have it go through different platforms no ads (yet)
CONS still basic functionality, they are hoping to add more features later Not available in the EU yet due to regulations they can't meet yet
another PRO is that Threads has declared its intention to adopt the ActivityPub standard, which would make it part of the same Fediverse as Mastodon:

The best explanation I heard is that it's more of a standard protocol among all the various platforms (think email or webpages). So you in theory (in the future?) can share content, have conversations, migrate people between them. The other thing I think it may mean is that you can create your own app or platform with a Thread feed, but basically have the search, filter, appearance, algorithm on who to show/hide/promote customized to your view or interface.
SwimDeep, DH and I also try to keep low or zero SM profiles to try to protect our private info as much as possible... but then BAM! MIL has a full insta page of a few years of pictures, one showing our faces and us holding a cert with our names on it (sky diving cert). I'm sure the data has already been picked up. She doesn't post as much, and younger SIL luckily posts less too, but all their info out their makes them prime targets for scams. I taught my parents to be more private, but my dad uses FB a ton to chat with old friends and watch videos.
I joined insta and twitter last fall. Insta to see my SIL's pics she wasn't putting on FB and twitter to DM american airlines to change a flight (works great, btw). I'll join Threads if that becomes a new way to DM with a company instead of waiting on phone holds.
But in terms of longevity, it does have the advantage of being distributed. Which means there's no one company or person running a centralised server that it relies upon.
