Trump says he received a target letter in federal Jan. 6 investigation
Former president Donald Trump said Tuesday morning that he received a letter from the Justice Department saying that he is the target of the long-running investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Trump wrote on social media that special counsel Jack Smith — the prosecutor leading the federal investigation — sent a letter on Sunday.
A spokesman for Smith declined to comment.
The target letter and potential indictment further ensnares Trump in unprecedented legal peril as he campaigns as the front-runner to be the 2024 Republican nominee for president.
Special counsel adds additional charges against Trump in classified documents case
June 24 — One of Trump's attorneys speaks with the former president about the security video. June 25 — Nauta and De Oliveira meet at a security guard booth, where surveillance video is displayed on monitors. De Oliveira later steps into an audio closet with another employee and has a conversation that De Oliveira says should be kept between them. June 27 — De Oliveira tells an unnamed employee that the "boss" wants the Mar-a-Lago surveillance video deleted.
Half the GOP doesn’t think Trump had sensitive documents at Mar-a-Lago (me - freaking hell - he even admitted it on tape)
I just don't understand this. I saw some really depressing data that these magats would be even more likely to vote for him if convicted. I would think a conviction would make him ineligible, but so many things I thought were law her proved weren't, so what do I know
The data displayed above tells me that if the GOP wants to have any chance at winning the general, they need to pick ONE person to run in the primary against Trump. Let's hope they don't do that.

Its stunning to me. He’s said he did it and they STILL say he didn’t do it. How do you rationalize with people like this? God, this country has gone off the rails.

I don’t think it ever has been ON the rails. I just think now people are feeling safe and comfortable waving their arms in the air while driving the train off a cliff.

No, it wouldn't.
Apparently Joe Exotic is running from a prison cell, so clearly our rules are due for an update.
I don’t know why this is striking me as so funny, but in the new superseding indictment Jack Smith provided a timeline and conversations of the co-conspirator. So, the head of maintenance (charged in the new indictment) said to the head of IT something like ‘Trump wants the tapes wiped’ and the IT guy said ‘I don’t think Trump knows how to do that”. (Which is already funny) So, the head of maintenance doubled-down and said “the boss wants YOU to destroy the servers” and the head of IT was all ‘nope, I’m not going to do that.’
Is it because I can imagine the conversation? That every IT guy I know would not even flinch with a “hell no, dude.”

No, it wouldn't.
A rep was determined ineligible for office in his state for participation in Jan 6 and was removed from office. It was under some constitutional amendment. My brain wants to say 13, but that doesn't seem right. Acts of treason surely have to be in the laws somewhere
I saw this chart yesterday. So basically his base is small but not small enough to not win the primary. Everyone just sucks so bad and you know they’ve had a few years to figure out how to take him on but they are all cowards.
If he came out and said yes I stole the documents, didn't give them back, tried to purge the server, told people to lie for me, his base wouldn't care. This is entertainment for them and for a majority of them and they just want to see him fight the establishment. We saw how team normal turned out for midterms and then we just have to hope they do the same in 2024. I also don't think he's going to jail because the trump appointee isn't sending a former potus 78 years old to serve life in jail. it all just sucks, he literally has nothing to lose continuing to be a criminal.

Even if Trump wins the majority of primaries, can the GOP not name him the GOP candidate at the RNC? I know I’m probably naive but I hope this indictment (and really all of them and just general logic and morals as well) would be the catalyst for the majority of GOP politicians voters and decision makers to separate themselves from Trump. If he is the GOP candidate (especially if they could have selected otherwise) there is no hope for the GOP to ever return from the abyss of this cesspool (not that the were great by even the slimmest margin before.)

I feel like there was discussions along these lines in 2015/2016. But I don’t recall the outcome. Can someone just declare themselves a republican or democrat and start running on that ticket? Shouldn’t the party have some vetting and be able to say “this guy is not ours”?

Yes they can. Prior to having primaries party leaders chose the candidate, so they had to be active in the party. It was a far less democratic process, but it did ensure folks who aren’t affiliated with the party can’t usurp resources and the line. See also Bernie using Dem resources when he wants and disavowing them after.
Fox News is really scrambling to figure out the messaging on this latest Trump indictment. So far, they are mostly ignoring it in favor of coverage of Hunter Biden (I know, shocker) and some teenager who hit a politician in the head with a water balloon while he was walking in a parade (??) I know, world news stuff. And mostly that Trump is polling really well for re-election and Biden is not. And guys, all these lawsuits are going to be expensive for Trump!
Those poor Fox talking heads - what huge meteorite on a collision course with earth ? nothing to see here !

I might have posted this before, but I remember on January 6th and watching live TV that the strength of our institutions would ensure that Biden would indeed become POTUS at the inauguration, so even that day I felt not a single worry. And through this process I continue to be in awe of just how naive I've been. We were thisfuckingclose to not having a transfer of power.
And now this asshole will get voted to be the GOP nominee for 2024. What a country.
Trump is the one and only guy for about 30-35% of the GOP electorate. That's not a majority, but they will not buy into anyone else easily. Not even DeSantis.
All this nonsense makes me happy in some ways and it would make me gleeful to see him in an orange jumper, but what I really want is Trump to just slink away and never be heard of or from again. I honestly just want presidential candidates on both sides who are smart, hardworking and passionate about effecting positive change. Why instead do we have Bravo drama presidential elections?

If he is the nominee, I at least feel pretty confident that he'll lose the election. We already had Biden vs. Trump in 2020 and he lost. Since then we've had years of stable, competent leadership under Biden, while Trump has continued to unravel as he's charged with a litany of crimes. A rematch isn't going to go any better for Trump than the first time did, IMO.

I remember back in 2015/2016, I was watching The West Wing and the timing worked out such that distinctly remember watching the episode of the Jimmy Smits / Alan Arda debate just a few days after the real debate where the candidates were talking about "hand size." And I was so...sad.

It's going to be an ugly election season though.
And yet there are still people who will vote third party because "both sides."
