I found out from being on the PTA that the school hasn't replaced the librarian slot despite the previous one announcing in early May they were leaving.
And admin either has a great poker face, or there truly isn't a sense of urgency in filling the slot. I'm hoping it's the former.
The library cannot subsist on the PTA volunteers who help check out books. They don't do the programming the librarian did.
Unfortunately I wouldn’t be surprised if they think a PTA volunteer can do the job. Many admins and many members of the general public have no idea what is involved in being a librarian and literally believe it is just checking books in and out. I would advocate for the role’s importance whenever you can.
I subbed for the librarian at my DS' (and now my) school last school year. I have so much respect for how much she does without any additional help from other staff. She prepares & implements lesson plans for all the kids because all classes come in 2x/week, checks in & out books, does recess duty & drop off/pick up. I'm sure that's the tip of the iceberg fwiw. Also, in our red city she stocks the library with inclusive and welcoming books for all reading levels. I <3 her.
My 15 yo has both a job and a dog walking business and the business is going so well that she has repeat clients and referrals from those clients. She is also certified and volunteers at the local rescue shelter because it “fits her skill set”. The money is remarkably good and adds up a lot !

So, I feel like I'm made for summer because we aren't as overscheduled with sports and whatever else as we are the rest of the year, and yet here I am missing the hectic schedules and them being in school versus summer camp (even though camp is so nice because we have more lazy time in the morning and there's no homework). Or maybe I just really want pumpkin spice season to be here.
