I draw the line on anything currently alive, and bugs/larvae/worms that aren't ground into some kind of meal. Poorly butchered meats where bits of bones and gristle are everywhere. Picking bones out of fish is also really just a no.
Oh and durian. Had it. Not a fan. I guess I'm thinking adventurous more in terms of combinations of flavors or spices, not that it has to be some sort of living being that isn't normally raised for food.
Normal for whom? In the US, Guinea pigs are viewed as pets but are definitely part of the typical diet in many South American countries. I read an article about trying to introduce them to Uganda and other countries in Africa where there are illness caused by protein deficiency. Guinea pigs are an excellent source of protein, require little space, and don't take long to reach maturity.
I’m not proud, but that’s a big reason I cannot do chef’s choice dinners or most tasting menus. I’ve expanded my palate some, but it’s still Midwest basic.
This is me, except it doesn't bother me. The only thing that bothers me is I like very few fruits and veggies and that makes it a struggle to eat better.

I will taste just about anything, and I'm fortunate to like 95% of things I've tried. I've had brains, mopane worms, fish guts, game meats, etc.
Really the only lines I draw are: no raw beef/chicken/pork. And the one food that makes me gag is raw tomato. I would eat crickets before a raw tomato, even if it's mixed in with other things I like. Ugh just thinking about it I feel nauseous.

I'll try anything once although I do steer clear of spicy food ... if there's a spicy or mild version of something, I'll always try the mild (mexican, thai, indian especially).
I love trying new foods, especially international foods. I'm comparing myself to my cousin that would only eat chicken fingers and cucumbers. But I have no interest in bugs, organ meat, etc.
Personally, I strive to be an adventurous eater less than I strive to be a polite one. As a guest, I would eat almost anything served by a host and teach my kids to do the same. I feel that skill is falling out of fashion.

Well, I would hope someone wouldn’t serve me grasshoppers! Lol, especially since we only eat at close friends houses really. Not that I wouldn’t eat at someone else’s house, but we’re just not invited to much like that.
Lol I have been served crickets at a friend's house! They served chicken and vegetable tamales, but they had these (store bought) spicy cricket snacks on the side for people to try.

I don't expect grasshoppers, either. lol.
I think the most useful "adventurous" eating isn't crickets, it's smiling through Marge's mediocre casserole.
I've been thinking more about this and have decided that I'm less adventurous than I want to think I am. Because I will not eat figs.
I don't think I would be able to eat eyeballs either. We've cooked whole fish a few times and the way the eyes look makes it difficult for me to eat/enjoy the fish. I still think I'd be okay trying crickets, but I'd have to be starving for a while to eat a fig 🤷♀️

Have you ever eaten a fig? I mean, we all have preferences. My husband HAS eaten eyeballs (once, would not do it again) but he doesn't like beets or fennel/anise.

I want to add that the popularity of raw oysters is mindblowing to me. I truly can't wrap my head around wanting to shoot back something- fishy that's the consistency of thick snot.

I have not - partly because I've never had the opportunity. They're expensive and weren't available fresh in my area until the last few years (unless I just wasn't looking). I've had fig spread and don't mind it. But now that I know about the wasps I just don't think I'll ever eat a fresh fig.
Sometimes I'll stare at fresh figs in the store for a minute trying to talk myself into it. But I always land on "nope."
And yet I'm in here saying I would try crickets and ants... 🤷♀️😅
