Sorry I don’t know how to do a gift link. This is so sad. I don’t know the answer. I don’t trust Mayor Adams. Will the federal government step in?
"They came from Colombia and Chad, from Burundi, Peru, Venezuela, Madagascar. In New York they had heard there was a haven for immigrants, a place to live and get back on their feet.
When they arrived, they found out that they had heard wrong.
Two, three, four days later, they were still lined up outside the city’s migrant intake center at the Roosevelt Hotel, around the corner from Grand Central Terminal — close to 200 people, nearly all men. Sleeping on the sidewalk. Heads resting on book bags, trash bags of belongings by their sides: the visible faces of a system that has officially broken down."
"For over a year, record numbers of asylum seekers have arrived in New York from across the globe, nearly doubling the city’s homeless population in one huge spasm: More than 100,000 people now live in shelters in the city."
Here’s a gift link. This is absolutely horrendous. I really hope Hochul is able to send in immediate relief since I don’t trust Adams to handle this crisis. I’m glad Legal Aid is threatening another lawsuit to help these people.
My sister lives about 15 minutes outside of Albany (so almost 3 hrs north of the city) and told me that a local motor inn was housing about 75 migrants.
There is zero public transportation in her town and very little ethnic and racial diversity. And while Albany has a lot of resources her town does not. It really seems like the government (state probably) is just dumping these people where they can.

Honestly, neither of them have been handling the crisis well.
Realistically, I just don't know what can be done when there is simply nowhere to house them besides creating makeshift tents in places that are so isolated. We have asylum seeker housing in our borough but the first buildings they used are soooooooo far from anything. But, that's where there was space. And now there is just no space.
I hate the idea of bussing people elsewhere but historically, immigrants had existing family or friends in locations (or jobs already set up) which basically drove them to specific cities/towns without being bussed anywhere, if that makes sense. I think what's really different now is that so many people who have arrived at least to NYC don't have existing social networks already here; I mean, just look at these countries of origin - yes, it's NYC so you can certainly find at least one person in the five boroughs from any particular country, but it's still different if there isn't a sizable, known community of people (even if you don't know anyone specifically - the support network and shared language/culture still exists to make it easier to make a life here).
Basically, I don't have any solutions to this but we need some because as people already mentioned, climate change for sure will make this a growing concern.

That all makes a lot of sense, and absolutely complicates the issue.

This is nearish to me, I think. Does her town start with R?
I teach in this area so I’m curious if my school will get a lot of new students. Luckily the city I teach in has a good bus system and is very diverse, but also very low socioeconomically.

Yep!
I was there last weekend and saw the klan rally right in front of the motel. Fucking disgusting.
And I can't imagine her town has a robust ELL population so I hope the kids go to a school that can help them. I don't understand why they would be placed so far from a community to support them.
Meanwhile, in upstate NY counties are declaring a state of emergency to ban other municipalities (i.e. NYC) from contracting with local hotels or multiple dwellings. The linked article is Binghamton, but I've heard that other counties are doing the same.

Showing their asses here. Binghamton has historically taken in many refugees (along with Utica) but now I guess it’s a problem.
I’m also really starting to get annoyed by the whole thing of “but they can’t get services here.” Like, let’s look at that - minus truly isolated islands or whatever, not having services is a choice. It’s a choice to keep certain people out. I see it even within NYC - our borough’s services are all clustered in just a few neighborhoods. Guess who lives in those neighborhoods?

For sure. It's all xenophobia and racism. We have cheap housing and way more open space than NYC. If more areas would do their part the refugee crisis would be so much more manageable in more humane ways.

Currently in upstate NY and I have been hearing about the ban cities are taking. I was just talking to my cousin about this tonight since she resides here, it's awful that this is happening and I can't imagine it's going to improve anytime soon
