What the hell was that last thing? What did I just watch? The ground beef wasn't cooked all the way the middle. GROSS.
I will say I love the Tasty videos. I watch a lot of FN, but most of it is competition shows. I do learn a lot about food and cooking from both sources. I'm not the best cook by any stretch, but I like practicing new techniques/ways of cooking.
That"creator" is part of a group of people who specifically make terrible videos to troll people because hate engagement is still engagement and increases their views.
I don't generally watch cooking videos or making anything from them. But something ran across one of my feeds last week that was oatmeal banana "pancakes" and I had had 20 bananas delivered from Instacart by accident, so I tried making them to use some. They were kind of horrible. I guess the flavor was ok - not great - but the consistency was all wrong and they didn't stick together. So, I was reminded why I don't really do internet cooking videos!
I scroll though lots of cooking videos on TT for fun. The best thing internet cooking videos have done for me is to take myself less seriously and make stuff even when I don’t have all of the ingredients. Julia Childs drop a chicken on the floor of her kitchen on live TV and just kept going. We can all learn a lot from that.

Friends post absolutely gross videos with all sincerity. I don't mean troll posts. These are meat and cheese monstrosities. And they, um, feed off each other.
I see all the likes and reshares of shit I wouldn't give my cat (she'd like it though). So I'm saying no. Watch pbs, read a cookbook, but TikTok is not making us better
I’ve always liked cottage cheese. The only kind I eat currently is Friendship 2% - all the other brands or percentages are not quite right in taste or texture to me.
Ha, you and my DH both. That is literally the only kind of cottage cheese he will eat and its kind of hard to find around here.

yep, when I find it in stock I grab a few bc it never seems to be around
I guess I’ve had a soft spot for cottage cheese since the 80s. I grew up using it in place of ricotta in lasagna. I know, I’m going to hell. But, my HS go to turn to cook dinner was fridge pie crusts, cottage cheese, eggs, and green box parmesan as one layer, Raghu pasta sauce, ground beef, and spinach as the next layer, and a pie crust on top. BAM! Lasagna pie.
Also, I want some cottage cheese for lunch now.
Same! My mom used it in manicotti when I was a kid, because ricotta was not easily available in my podunk little town. I love cottage cheese. When I'm trying to watch my diet, I'll have cottage cheese, 2 hard boiled eggs and an apple for breakfast. Would I ever blend it to turn into something else? Hell no. Leave it as it is.
I just wanted to say, that ground beef Velveeta monstrosity is straight garbage. When I saw her dumping that 80/20 ground beef tube in a raw pie crust, I said "no way that will cook properly." Sure enough, that shit was raw AF when she took a bite. Hope the views were worth the food poisoning.

I make manicotti that has cottage cheese in it (and ricotta and like 4 other cheeses) and it's the bomb.

I thought you people were my friends, but now you're praising cottage cheese. I thought that was just a diet fad for our grandmothers along with grapefruit for breakfast.
Is this where I say I miss the chew? Sure Mario batali is shit, and Daphne oz is worthless, but I really enjoyed the others. And they had my favorite on regularly, kenji lopez-alt.
I will say that the most helpful food videos I've seen are the Masterclass lessons from Thomas Keller and Gordon Ramsay. Like, I'm finally able to poach an egg! Of course, that's paid content, so I would hope it would be helpful.

I agree with this... I think videos can be super helpful if they're describing *how* to do something or what something needs to look like at a certain stage. Like, what consistency should egg-based custard for ice cream be? I didn't get it when I read it, but watching an Alton Brown video from Good Eats made it instantly clear.
All this cottage cheese talk above... I still hate the stuff - and ricotta isn't that far behind it so i can see how y'all use it as a substitute.
But it is sooooo good for you!
So I keep trying it. I know someone who eats sriracha on it - tried it and hated it. I hate it with anything sweet.
But one day I mixed ranch dip mix into it, and it was amazing! The texture doesn't bother me, so if that's your problem with it, this won't help you. But if you, like me, generally hate cottage cheese for the flavor, give the ranch a try. It is delicious on celery or with carrots. Use a pint of cottage cheese instead of a pint of sour cream for one packet of ranch dip mix and voila - high protein-packed dip!

I loved The Chew!! I learned to make really good fish and chips from a Gordon Ramsay video. I always messed it up prior.

If you need to use up some bananas, this is my favorite, one-bowl, almost impossible to screw up banana bread recipe.

Most of the "cooking" and I use that term loosely, videos I see in my FB and IG reels are precisely the reason I refuse to move back to the midwest - every recipe involves a crock pot and copious amounts of dairy (shredded cheese, cream cheese, cream of something soup, velveta, boursin) and prepackaged processed food.
There are a handful I follow but they use real food (the guy w/ the cool color blocked cutting board who always cooks w amazing cuts of meat).

Thanks! I ended up making banana bread, too, and it was ok but I was thinking that next time I may want to try a different recipe. Now I know which one to use!

I loved The Chew too! It was such a happy show to watch, specifically Clinton Kelly and Carla Hall. I miss it. I wonder if I can stream it anywhere. Off to google.
ETA: bummer no luck. Maybe Apple+, I'll have to try later. Looks like Mario ruined it for the rest of them.

Also, it's not salty like three ocean, batali. Kenji appropriately called that out and said it's about half as salty and gave his ppm measurement.
As for poached eggs mentioned above, I've seen every tutorial and could kind of get it right. No amount of swirling or vinegar ever got it perfect, though. The best to was one I read. Prick a hole in the shell with a safety pin (or similar) and boil for something like 10 seconds. Then proceed as normal.
I do recognize the different types of learners. I want to read and see pictures. A video makes me tune out. My friend keeps telling me to use audiobooks instead of my Kindle. No sir. I need to read it. I learned to true a chicken from Thomas Keller step by step pictures, not his video. But I won't discount a video may work better for others
