It may never be a place that most people go to, but the French/Swiss alps are fabulous in the summer.
Flew into Geneva and got picked up by my friend who decided to drive there (as she had something to do in Belgium a few days earlier). We just went for a walk through Morzine that evening and go out for dinner at The Hideout, which does Asian fusion. Fabulous and would go back any day.
One of the things you get when you stay in a villa in Morzine (we stayed in one with More Mountains - recommend!) is a pass to do a bunch of stuff in the local area. The following day it rained, so I decided to go ice skating while my friend went swimming (she does competitions so needed to continue training). It cost all of 4.20 euros including skates along with the pass, which was fab. I spent a good hour skating away and remembering how to do it. If I was with a group or had kids, it would be a great thing to enjoy in the afternoon. I spent most of the day relaxing and wandering through the town.
Other things we did during the week (better weather though only the last day was sunny and warm)-
- go up the Super Morzine lift and then hike down - checked out Avoriaz (kinda dead but has lots of kids stuff to do) - The Goat Village and walking around the mountains near it to see a lovely waterfall - a definitely do again! I have never laughed so hard as the goats swarming a little old man who was holding food. - watched some of the start of the Morzine motor rally (cars began to arrive a few days into the trip) - lots of other long walks, going up lifts and hiking. - standing on top of a mountain that has a chair lift into Switzerland (which was closed). - ate so much cheese and went to a traditional Alps restaurant called La Grange, which I would also recommend.
You’re right, most Americans wouldn’t have the alps at the top of theirEuropean bucket lists, but it is beautiful! Thanks for sharing your photos. I hope to do some hiking in the Swiss Alps someday.
Could you elaborate on the villa part? Is it like Airbnb where you have a small kitchen and make your own meals?
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

The kitchen was fully kitted out, so definitely NOT small. You do make your own meals. The place we were in had ensuite bathrooms for each bedroom and an option for a kids space with bunk beds and their own 'playroom/tv room'. It was more than we needed but my friend had worked with the company so was able to get it as it wasn't rented out. You can find tons of places like that in most ski locations. (Chalets).
