Didn’t there used to be, like, fist fights on the Senate floor? But this is disrespecting the office? Doesn’t that undermine the dignity of the place more? Personally, I don’t care about the change, for the reasons mentioned above about patriarchy and racism.
I remember being obsessed with the story of a senator beating another senator over the head with a cane as a high schooler.
Not to mention that hoodies and pull-on shorts are likely easier for him if he had any fine motor issues after his stroke.
I can attest to this. I almost never wear socks with shoes anymore because of fine motor issues. I actively avoid anything with buttons and zippers as well.
It's great but the other side is obviously going to run with this in all the wrong ways. Good for him, maybe this can be the start of something bigger of overhauling things.
Me too! I exclusively wear elastic waist pants. Sometimes I can do buttons in the morning but don’t trust that I could manage them when I need the bathroom later.

Sen. John Fetterman: "If those jagoffs in the House stop trying to shut our government down, and fully support Ukraine, then I will save democracy by wearing a suit on the Senate floor next week."
Trump wears a suit every single day and has zero respect for the office. It’s almost like what people wear doesn’t matter or dictate how well they can do the job…
Remember how people reacted when Obama wore a tan suit? No respect for the dignity of the Presidency 🙄

This was discussed in a FB group I'm a part of. Most were being all pearl clutchy over the relaxed dress code. I was the ONLY one who brought up that this relaxed dress code is for the mental health and possible post-stroke sensory/motor skills isuses that Fetterman has.
Also, given Fetterman's TALL stature, 6'8" I think, its not only expensive but a royal PITA to find suits that fit that don't cost a small fortune. My dad is 6'8" and only owns a handful of suits. He also dresses casual about 90% of the time (jeans/khakis/polo/button down) bc of the height issue precluding ability to find an array of clothing that fits right.

I remember when AOC was first elected. I believe she was fairly transparent about cost for travel, living, and clothing.
It’s been a while, and my memory isn’t perfect. However I seem to recall a decent amount of discussion surrounding her not having proper attire, then how dare she obtain a lot of proper attire?! It’s so expensive! How did she afford that?! It was bonkers.
I think there’s that old saying, “clothes make the the man” but I definitely prefer, “manners make the the man”. If I truly had my druthers, it’d be an inclusive phrase as well. So. I’m alllllll in for putting your resources towards what you’d like, changing archaic structures that are no longer relevant, and focusing on actual important aspects. Like inclusivity, equality, healthcare, socioeconomic equity, safety nets for all, etc etc etc etc etc.
