While I know kids shouldn’t be spoken to like that, “useless lumps” made me lol.
My parents were friends with most of the teachers in my small town. One day at the elementary school Judy walked out of her room and could hear another teacher Linda yelling at her class across the hall. Judy walked over to listen to see if Linda needed any help. Judy stood there when all of a sudden she heard Linda say "I mean it, straighten up. You all are acting like a bunch of dildos!" Judy gasped and opened the door and motioned for Linda to come to the hall. She asked if Linda was OK and Linda said yes. Judy said but you called your students dildos and Linda said yes I did and they are. Then it occurred to Judy "Linda, what's a dildo?" Linda "Oh, you know silly, silly people." Judy explained to her what a dildo is and Linda said "My God, I've been calling them that all week!"
But you say the teacher you work with called them useless lumps and then you said that they were, so you are condoning the teacher calling them that. That's terrible.
Yes she does. She said don’t sit there being a useless lump find something to do. It doesn’t strike me as a terrible awful comment and the kids laugh and get to work. Clearly it’s an awful thing to say, but it’s never come across as mean spirited.
You're backpedaling here. Your initial post did not indicate you felt it was an awful thing to say, but deserved.
I would wait and see how today went, hopefully the teacher has had time to calm down and will have an appropriate response today.
While 100% inappropriate, is this the first time the teacher has lost control like that? If this is an ongoing issue then definitely go to the principal, but if it is the first time they have lost it I would want to touch base with the teacher first in a non-judgemental way since you don't know what actually happened.
If there is a consequence given to the whole class I would follow up with the teacher to remind them that my kid was not actually present at that time.
I'm sure you aren't the only parent making calls if kids went home crying.
The fifth grade classes at my school are out.of.control.
I don’t and have never called my students names, but damn, some of these kids absolutely know better and do the worst shit ever because they can. I had a 10 year old ask me I was fucking dumb the other day. I wouldn’t bring this to the principal (the recess thing I would). Sometimes teachers yell.
What this thread is teaching me is that 5th graders were very negatively impacted at their stage in development when the pandemic hit.
I'm not even a teacher but will fully support those who call certain students horrible. To their face, preferably not. In a place like this where they are here to vent that students will never see? Absolutely. Some students are horrible! No sugar coating it. Self-fulfilling prophecy or not.

I am never going to recover from this (just as I suspect she did not). Omg. I am crying.
