I love the people who write “hello” and nothing else. I write back “hi.” And then when they inevitably don’t reply, I write “Cool” or “Good chat.” Lmao.
After I replied that I was in the middle of something, he asked that I let him know when I had time to chat. He did mention the topic, but said he needed clarifications on something. I asked a second time that he just email me his request. Mostly because I now know what he wants and it does NOT require a conversation.
And now that a couple people have mentioned it, I’m realizing it is usually the coworkers that are overseas that do this. Maybe we’re just showing our asshole American-ism here? Oh well, you’re not my boss, get to the point!
I used to be the person that just launched in with "HI I NEED THIS 🙂🙂🙂" type language, but after working with so many people overseas I've softened a bit. Now I do some variation of "Hi- hope your day is going well. When you get a chance I need xyz."
When I get the basic "hi..." message. I just respond with "Hello! 🙂 How can I help you?"
I've noticed engineers are particularly bad at the hanging Hi 👋. No correlation to nationality or timezone (that I've noticed yet at least lol).
I'm working on reducing my use of !! and 🙂🙂🙂... but tone is so hard to read and I want people to like me 😕
Considering I got in "trouble" a few months ago because a man in a different department thought I was "rude" in a group email by starting out "Hey all" rather than address him by name...I would probably provide pleasantries, but in the first message.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
