hi!! I've been pretty MIA over here the last couple months with basketball season. It was incredibly busy but oh so fun!
It was DS1s final season and he had a new coach. DS liked him BUT a lot of the other boys didn't. I think its because he actually held them accountable. If they didn't go to school on time all week, they didn't play in games. (excluding Dr notes)
DS1 moved up to a starter the 2nd half of the season!! It was awesome.
Unfortunately, the kid who's place he took, quit. We were all shocked. He was a team captain and everything. He didn't even talk to the coach about being unhappy. He just had his mom tell the coach after one of the games that he was done. (smh)
In the end they went from a 2-18 season last year to a 10-12 season this year and they made States for the first time in years.
DS had a great season. I'm so sad it's all over. Basketball is such a huge piece of his life. Its hard seeing it end. He was awarded the Conference Scholar Athlete for their team and he got to go to the casino for the conference finals to receive it. Proud mom over here
DS2 didn't have a good freshman season. they lost every game and he averaged about a minute of playing time each game! ugh
We are hearing the AD may get wrestling started next year so we are hoping he will try that. He's floundering a little ans I'm not sure what he will do.
Spring will be quiet. DS1 will be playing golf. No spectators so I'll just pick him up after practice
DS2 will be throwing in track. There are over 20 throwers so I'm not sure he'll get much meet time either but we will see. he just started yesterday! However they hit the weight room a lot for practice so that'll be good for him. And he is slowly making friends.
During basketball, he was sitting in the student section and making connections.
Oh and one other cool thing that happened, our friends daughter played Varsity girls basketball and she hit 1000 points in the very last game with 2 mins left. we were going to all the girls games too and we weren't sure because her last game (1st round of states), she needed 22 pts. It was a tall order but she made it happen. it was so fun to watch and be there for!!
traveltheworld, does she fight you on going? I've decided that I won't fight with my kids to go to an activity, so we are dropping band and Girl Scouts, but DD still enjoys soccer so we are continuing that.
traveltheworld, I agree that 9.5 is a lot for a sport that she doesn't love. What about something like ninja warrior classes? Or are there any rock climbing gyms around? DD2, who we call Our Lady Of Perpetual Motion, ended up really loving rock climbing this winter. She has rejected any sport that didn't require constant running, so I was surprised by this. Or some form of martial arts?
I do agree with waverly - if there's a fight, we stop the activity. My concern would be that you'd sign her up for gymnastics, she would realize how much 9.5 hours a week really is, and she'd start fighting you. Is it a full-year thing or can you go month to month?

traveltheworld, how old is she? We are definitely a active-but-not-sporty family and some of the things my girls have enjoyed are recreational ice skating classes (learn to skate), roller skating basic and trick classes, kayaking and SUP (this would be hard to commit to weekly I think), swimming stroke classes, and aerial yoga.
The aerial yoga is actually an adult class that my 12yo and I take together. There is a kids silks class that my younger one takes but the kids in there trend young so I just called the yoga studio and asked if DD1 could attend if I come with her, and they were fine with it. Since your DD likes gymnastics she might like aerial yoga or silks? There are also Lyra (trapeze) classes but where we go they start at 16.
traveltheworld, DD does competitive gymnastics and does about that many hours a week. I will say a lot of kids do a season of level and 3 and then drop because they like gymnastics but don't love it and don't want to put the time/effort into the bigger harder skills. If she likes gymnastics is there a power tumbling class, aerial yoga, acro tumbling, or cheer group that she could try. Still uses her gymnastics skills but isn't as time and $$$ of comp gymnastics.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
DS is so excited for his soccer game today. Which, not unusual. But his phrasing was so perfect for where we are/he is in respect to soccer.. kid straight up said “I can’t wait to go casually play soccer today!”
And that’s a perfect description of his attitude towards soccer right now. It’s rec, so his mindset is totally okay.
