My HS math teacher used to bang erasers over kids’ heads so chalk rained down on their heads and then also would throw chairs. He never physically put his hands on anyone and although I was bad at math, I was a good kid. But when he was frustrated or mad, he let everyone know and while I was never was on the other end of his wrath, he scared the shit out of me.
I’m friends with his son, who graduated the same year I did, on FB and his dad recently died. All of these students from my school were raving about what a wonderful teacher and coach he was and how he changed their lives and perspective on math.
I realize that everyone was sad for him and I told him I was sorry for his loss, but I walked away from the thread feeling like I was being virtually gaslit (not really, but wow our memories differ) by all my former classmates.
Um.. off to Facebook to see if my hs math teacher passed recently because literal WORD FOR WORD.

I had this happen recently with a softball coach at the HS. Someone a year behind me posted and everyone was raving about how much they learned and how kind but firm he was, and I just remember him being a jerk who played favorites. I’m pretty sure he didn’t change in that 1 year I didn’t play with them.
tacokick , I could see that. Tough, abusive, but hey, we learned something and weren't too bored, so great teacher! Corporal punishment is still legal in TX schools, last I checked. Compared to a paddling, what's an eraser or a shoe which was my middle school science teacher's preferred toassable?
H was paddled in school- in TENTH GRADE. He grew up in a small Texas town. So fucked up! They didn't do that in my high school.
Indiana here, but my older brother recalls the day a guy was mouthing off to a teacher and this guy had been held back a year or two already and had a mustache and was bigger than everyone even the teacher. Teacher told the guy to go to the hallway and he was going to paddle him. Guy left the room and just walked home. Teacher was so mad he ran down the road to guy's house which he just saw guy enter. Teacher bangs on door with paddle in hand and guy's older brother answers denying guy is there or ever having seen him.🤣 That teacher was so pissed.
My high school English teacher would make inappropriate comments towards me and one day kicked the clog off of my foot and put it under his desk while he sat there and told me to retrieve it.
He didn’t do anything remotely inappropriate to anyone else (in my class) but was constantly targeting me.
I asked the counselor to be transferred to another English class and got a ton of push back. I didn’t want to make waves or make it a thing but fought and eventually won to get transferred. He was fired years later for sleeping with a student which was not at all surprising to me.
Another English teacher at the same school was fired for taking the girls cheerleading team to a college party and getting them fucked up (and IIRC one of the girls got pregnant). Wild shit from English teachers!
I had a teacher that smoked cigars between classes, IN THE CLASSROOM. She'd throw her butts in the trash can. Oh, Texas high school in the 90's lol
my third grade teacher did this except she would lean out the outside facing door so the smoke would go outside, lol.
I still stand by my comment that this thread is really horrifying, but of all of them, erbear, I feel like I need a detective to track down your old teacher and tell us what the hell happened. This might be my new roman empire.

Apparently it was a thing in my school for teachers to sleep with students. When I was in High School my one friend was sleeping with the track coach and another friend was sleeping with an Asst Principal. The Asst Principal recently passed away and the track coach just got fired and I think he's now even been prosecuted for sleeping with a student, so clearly he never changed his ways since I've been out of High School for 30 years. Recently it also came out that someone I was in school with who later became a teacher at the Middle School in the same district and he was apparently inappropriate with a student while his young daughter was dying from Cancer (I think). It was really gross and messed up.

I went to a religious school K-12, so it was pretty mild and these stories are crazy to me! I had one teacher 3 years in elementary, then for certain classes in middle school and high school. She told my parents it was a waste of money to let me go to college because I wasn't smart enough for it. I graduated college with honors, I'm currently working on my MBA, and I'm a corporate accounting controller, so I think I've done fine. I didn't learn well with her teaching style, and she refused to believe there was any other way to teach.
The fact that many of these did not even register as "odd" to me indicates that my HS was even messier than I'd been aware of. So many affairs (including teacher/student and staff/student); so many fights and drama; drinking, drugs, and smoking at school...was all just normal? I mean, it was gossiped about but it was the only school and we were already understaffed so we just KOKO. Ah, rural 90's life.
One English teacher told me to about sex to keep the other students interested in my poetry presentation.
Another teacher told me that only prostitutes apply makeup in public.
Yay private school 😂
I had a teacher also English that claimed
1. Women with gaps in their teeth are promiscuous- she presented this a verifiable facts.
2. She could tell just by interacting with a female (not about sex) if they were a virgin or not.
She was a very popular teacher but I have no idea how she didn’t get fired. I graduated 20 years ago and she has long since retired but I’m sure she wouldn’t make it now a days.

My high school chemistry teacher said if I smiled nicely at home, he'd give me a B- rather than a C+.
I did. He did.
Found out years later he got fired for sexual harassment. Not shocked.
I actually didn't mind him as a teacher, but he was totally verbally inappropriate with the female students. This was in the 80s and 90s, for context. I think he was fired in the mid 00s.

Agree, and I have no more info. I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
- my 2nd grade teacher went to prison for stealing money from senior citizens using fake “your grandchild has been kidnapped” schemes
- my high school science teacher (tiny private school - taught chem and physics) had homemade ninja throwing stars that he used to throw AT students, plus once killed a mouse with one in the middle of class. He also made wildly inappropriate comments to female students. He was beloved in the school.
- The French teacher slept with a student
- in general school insanity, my school would have an annual “slave auction day” where the freshman were auctioned as slaves to upperclassman and you had to do whatever they wanted that day, from carrying their books to dressing in a certain way etc. (you can imagine how that went) There would be a full 2 page spread in the yearbook for it. Thank goodness it ended my 8th grade year. The 80s/90s were a truly insane time.

What I'm getting from this thread is that my English teacher coke ring story is one of the least scandalous things most board members have experienced during their own K-12 educational experience.

My 4th grade teacher was one of the best teachers Ive ever had. Made me feel welcome as the new kid, went out of his way to help me make friends- just the nicest guy. And he was always ON. It was like having Robin Williams as your teacher- he had a bit for everything. Sometimes we’d leave on a Tuesday and the room looked normal, come in on Wednesday and it was a rainforest. Or he’d taken the door down to the closet, cleaned it out and made it look like a cave with Christmas lights as a reading nook. We wrote stories and poems and then he printed them out, bound them himself, and distributed them to the various dr and dentist waiting rooms in town so we would be published authors, lol. I remember more things we did in his class than all of middle school combined.
When I was in college he was arrested for buying coke from an undercover cop and lost everything. The energy makes sense now, but fuck if there isnt a whole generation of kids worse off because they didn’t get to have him.
The most unhinged partier I know is a much celebrated, award winning elementary school PE teacher. Un. Hinged.
Absolutely not surprising. Every time I have come close to seeing the face of God, a teacher or a nurse has been responsible.
H worked in advertising for a long time, and the drinking culture was very Mad Men- booze on the desks, shots at lunch, just drinking all the time was acceptable. He thought it was so wild. Then he came out to a teacher tailgate at the Phillies and was like “Nevermind, we’re light weights. This is a whole other level of alcohol consumption.” Lol
DH and I were talking the other week about the baseball team would go on a trip every spring break, usually to Vegas I think, and it was tradition that the team would get flashed. Usually by college girls, I guess. I was like, but who would arrange that?? And he was it was the coaches, and I was weirded out by his middle age coaches approaching college girls to flash their team, but holy cow, that's nothing compared to so many of the stories here.
Wait, I forgot about this. When I first started working at my current school, the head who hired me was leaving. He went to another private school in California. Fast forward to five years later, his mug shot dropped — he had been arrested in a hotel room with cocaine and a very young woman, possibly a prostitute.

Our local middle school had a teacher arrested and charged with sexual assault, supplying Marijuana to minors, inappropriate texts, photos with minors. It involved multiple students I think were 13+, not only in our school but he was a coach of another towns high school.
It makes my stomach turn. A couple of the boys victimized are in my sons grade. he'd meet them at the gym to workout and I guess would expose himself to them, offer them weed in the car, etc
I'm pretty sure my son was a potential future victim as well. He used to talk about this teacher and how he would help him and give him cookies.
I did question my son for a while after hearing about the cookies.
The oddest bit was that he didn't even have this teacher. He was on the other team but my son would stop by with a friend between classes and they'd be given cookies. (one of the friends he'd go get cookies with was a victim).
He used to tell me how he ran outside with them (cross country), he encouraged him during lunch to try out for basketball again in 8th after being cut the year prior. I even remember seeing a Google chat to my son during covid saying reach out anytime he needs any help I'm social studies and that he was pretty good in math too.
Looking back there were red flags everywhere but it all seemed fairly innocent at the time. I mean teacher do hand out sweets and snacks, lollipops and even soda to students. As an outsider, it's difficult to differentiate.
Just this week, my younger son was walking by his Biology teacher and asked if he had any dum dums (he hands them out atls rewards in class) and he tossed a rice crispy treat to him.
I spoke with my son after the guy was arrested and he swore up and down he never touched him, exposed himself or said anything inappropriate or offered him any sort of drugs. This is also my sonnwhobeas mute with teachers in middle school.
Anyway, my son was never alone with the teacher . All of the contact/crimes were performed outside of school and I'm positive he never saw my son outside of school. Only in school with everyone else around. During lunch, between classes. that kind of thing.
It took years in court and he recently pled guilty to 4 counts of each of the charges and received 10 years jail but it is suspeded after 18 months.
