Was anyone surprised by the people who wrote letters of support for Brian Peck? I admit I gasped at James Marsden. I’ve loved him since Second Noah.
I have the memory of a mosquito (unless you've done me wrong which is elephantine) but didn't many write these letters before they knew the details? Things like I never experienced it, so clearly this is wrong. And then saying oh shit, I retract.
I'm not saying that stance is defensible, but I think it's human. Someone you've known for years who's never shown that side to you, you might come to their defense before all the details are known.
I was disappointed by it, but not surprised. SO so so so so many people believe abusers and use the lines "he's never shown that type of behavior towards me, therefore he must be a perfectly fine and upstanding man!" or feel the only way the abusers could have done the thing is if they were "tricked" by the victims. Peck was also clearly a master manipulator who was able to manipulate his way around for years and likely still is.
That said - i don't give those who wrote letters a free pass. I believe that letters of support are written after the trial and during the sentencing phase - any of those people could have read open court documents, shown up for the trial, etc to know what they were actually defending.
I hope we are getting closer to understanding that folks can be one way with some folks and completely different to others and that we are better about actually believing victims - but we aren't there yet as a society.

I watched the first episode ... being a late stage GenXer ('74) my Nick viewing was mostly Double Dare, Hey Dude!, Clarissa Explains it All ... pre- Dan Schneider stuff. I even auditioned for Finders Keepers, one of Nick's game shows in the late 80's.
I watched it horrified for the female writers. I was so freaking happy they filed a suit against him fully aware of any and all repercussions.

gretchenindisguise, I absolutely do not give them a pass. I can ssee them saying "but I never saw" and them realizing later how wrong they were. OK, fine, use your ignorance. I don't give them a pass that probably they were shown earlier and ignored it.
