My parents encouraged me to do something so I started babysitting neighborhood kids for a few years before I could drive. Once I was able to drive on my own, I would work a retail job on weekends so it wasn’t interfering with school during the week. That worked for me
I had a paid job (under the table) starting at age 12 during the summers, and I was also required to do a lot of unpaid work on our farmette year-round. More than what would be considered "chores".
It seems like kids stay busier now with extracurriculars and clubs tryin to compete for those college spots. I don't remember doing anything outside of summer band and occasional practice when a competition was near.
