I have always been able to block my nostrils from smelling something without actually physically pinching my nostrils shut, but I just found out H can’t do this.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

Isn’t this just not breathing? Or am I missing something?
Yes, but still breathing through your mouth. IDK! H was astounded I don’t have to pinch my nose closed to not smell something and I thought it was something everyone could do, so I wanted to crowd source lol.

I think every human should be able to physically do this?? Idk man 😂😂 I definitely don’t need to pinch my nose underwater, and I can breathe through my mouth.
ETA: This feels like a conversation that would happen after a few drinks! Lol

Yes. It’s the same kind of reflex I use under water or when jumping into a pool etc. I assume some people don’t have that though bc I see full blown adults who hold their nose before going under. I don’t understand it bc I just do it automatically but bodies are weird!!
I have a friend who could scrunch her upper lip to physically block her nose when swimming. I thought that's what you were talking about but now I'm just confused.
I don't need to hold my nose when swimming but also didn't feel like I'm consciously doing anything in order to keep water out.
Here I was trying to think of what muscles there could possibly be in the nostrils to allow it to be physically blocked, similar to pinching them shut with your fingers.
And you all are talking about regular mouth breathing.
Yes, I can do this. It doesn't block out bad smells completely but some. My kids still struggle with breathing underwater so they can't. I guess it takes time to learn.

In summary: huh?
Not me sitting in my living room trying to block my nosils with my upper lip lol. Couldn’t even come close - was this actually an effective technique for your friend?!

I do feel like there’s a difference between swimming and just sitting there holding your breath on dry land. With swimming you actively exhale out of your nose. I didn’t know holding your breath or breathing out of your mouth only was difficult for some people.

I love how you go straight to the biology and science of it.

Yes I think it’s weird that people have to physically plug their nose when they are underwater or jumping into a pool. Breathe out and the water won’t go into your nose!

To be fair, it’s more than just mouth breathing. 😂 I do this thing in the back of my nose / palate that blocks everything. When I mouth breathe, I’m still getting some air in through my nose and I can still smell things. But when I block my nose, I am breathing but also focusing on keeping scent from getting in.
