You would actually fit right in as a driver here. People would rather give up a kidney than zipper merge. Get your ass in the remaining lane a mile back or die!
I had never heard of a zipper merge until here! Edit-and my reaction was WTF YOU NEED TO WAIT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE ☠️
I learned to drive in a heavily congested area. To be fair, I don’t think people thought “Oh, 2 lanes are merging to 1, I should zipper merge”. We just did it.
Now that I live in a small city that has very little traffic, it’s wild to watch drivers do all the wrong things around unexpected merging (like construction). Is that a sign that says “merge, 2 miles”? That means that I immediately move into the lane that is already backing up. No.
It does mean that I drive 2 miles in the fast moving lane (mostly by myself) until we hit the merge. Every time.

I love Massholes but don't plan on renting a car in either city. My mom's gravestone is in Woods Hole, and I probably wouldn't ever get back there again, so that's another nod to Boston. In that case, I'd borrow a car from a local friend.
ETA: nothing brings out the righteousness in Seattle drivers like someone trying to zipper merge.
Honestly, it’s just not my jam (and I teach American history so that’s saying something). Too cold. Too many bad drivers. People are not that nice. Something about Boston has always been off to me in the times I’ve been there. I know other people love it, and that’s cool. It’s just not my place.
I mean, is the weather that different from Philly? It’s not like they are far apart.
ETA: about the drivers, ok, we are Massholes and I own that.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
As for weather, there is def a difference. When I moved to NYC in my 20s I assumed it would be the same but it was pretty consistently 10 degrees warmer in NYC vs Boston. I love NYC, but summers there were unbearably hot and smelly. The subway platforms in July and August were the worst. Zero stars.
For OP, you really can’t go wrong. Both cities have a lot to offer and enough to keep teens engaged.
We live on Long Island so get to Manhattan fairly often.
We are going to Salem and Boston this summer for our son’s 16th birthday. I am ridiculously excited. I vote Boston but I realize my excitement for Boston and lack of excitement for Manhattan is probably due to access. lol. I do take my kids to the city for random days in the city during summertime and we do all the touristy stuff - those days are always great days, so I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.
