I may regret saying this later, but yes, I think so. Winter here sucks. I love the sound of cicadas and other bugs and creatures in the summer. I oddly love when they're loud enough that I can hear them in my car with my windows up. I'm a pretty extreme night owl, though, so they're not screaming when I'm trying to go to sleep.
People here in central MD are freaking the F out about double broods emerging this year...... it seems they forget we had ours what, 2 years ago?, and the double emergence isn't anywhere near here. And only have a very small overlap. But noooooo, it's going to be terrible in MD! /s
I’m just dreading them because 2 years ago my dog got so painfully obese from eating cicadas he was waddling. We had to start muzzling the poor dummy when he went outside because he thought it was a 24 hour buffet.

Lolololololol! That's so sad and hilarious at the same time.

Thank you for sharing this. Our boy dog will ignore them, but our girl dog tries to eat everything from cat poop to toilet paper and it’s going to be a joyful six weeks for her.

This is going to be an interesting time. One of our dogs is already overweight. He is on a diet as prescribed by the vet but we struggle because he eats anything/everything he finds. He may need to be strictly supervised outside for awhile.

Highly recommend a muzzle! Though he did figure out how to scoop them up through the hole on top it slowed him down tremendously. He’s a hungry boy!!

Lolololololol! I love this. I imagine it was extremely frustrating at the time.

I think they're all traumatized because we did it once so recently. People have been very comforted when I remind them it's not going to be here. Just normal cicadas this year!
FWIW - I thought it was cool when it was happening. It was LOUD sometimes, and it was less cool when I was trying to do covid spike outdoor @ stuff with giant bugs flying into the sides of people's heads and some people chasing other people with casings in their hands and the shrieking, but all in all they're really not annoying bugs. They don't bite, they dont' want to come in the house, they don't want your food, and the sound is kinda cool honestly...they can hang out. I'm down with cicadas.

Oh me too! I don't mind them at all, I even make soap with the shed exoskeletons.
If anyone in the affected areas is a berry forager or grows summer berries, you'll have a bumper year b/c the birds prefer the cicadas to berries. We froze so many service berries & elderberries in our cicada-ggedon b/c the birds just left them alone.
@@@ And, should you be adventurous, my kids would roast them over the fire & eat them & report they taste vaguely of shrimp. (it was the pandemic, y'all! Entertainment was thin on the ground)

I did not see that one coming!
Ha! Snake shed, too. It gets dissolved in the lye solution before making the soap, which hydrolyzes the keratin/chitin/proteins and makes a really mild soap.
Also dreading it for dog related reasons. We only had our old man a few years ago who is oblivious to everything and totally deaf. Now we have our younger dog who notices everything and puts everything in her mouth.

2) I lived in Cincinnati in 2004 for their emergence, and it was like something from a horror film. Older neighborhoods with old trees had it worst, and I remember driving through them on my way home from work, and not being able to have the windows down because they were just constantly dive bombing the car. Then I'd pull up my hoodie, cinch it as closed as I could on my face, and make a literal run for it from my apartment parking lot to the door. Once inside I'd have to brush them off me. Those who love it - I wonder if you've been around it like this, or if you just hear them in the trees, because THAT was crazy, lol. Oh, and the poor brides who scheduled outdoor weddings in the gorgeous old park? cicadas were swarming the guests, and getting stuck in the tulle of veils, lace and beading of dresses. *shudder*
I don't mind the annual ones, but the giant broods? Never need to experience that again.

How did I know he was going to be a beagle?
I was expecting a Lab!
I live in WA and the lack of bugs was a consideration on moving here. How often do these brood things happen? I remember all sorts of muzzled dog videos on SM a few years ago.
