I don't simply bc I don't know who will show up until the event happens. I'll let everyone know about X event on X day and if they want tickets either let me know and I'll get you tickets OR I'll include info about ticketing.
Miss R was in plays through elementary school and she only had extended family there once.

I marked it depends. DD2's recital tickets are 7 dollars--I figured we will pay for grandparents and her babysitter (who she is closer to than her actual grandparents) to see if it. Provided they want to go of course.

We pay. Anyone who comes already has expenses just to come to our town (we live 3 hours from our closest relatives). And it’s not like they would be attending a random chidren’s dance recital for funsies. We have the flexibility in our budget to cover these things so we do.
I always purchase them because in our case (dance recitals), seats are assigned, so I want us to sit together. Our extended family is OOT, but the grandparents have visited for some of them. My parents always pay me back (I don't ask). My FIL never does, but I don't think it even occurs to him that we paid for his ticket, so it's no big deal. I wouldn't ask for reimbursement unless the ticket price was high ($35 is a lot!) or I was buying multiple tickets.
I don't have kids and my sister's kids live far away, so sadly I have yet to attend something like this for them. If I did, I think I'd expect to pay my own way. Or my parents would buy our tickets, lol. I would not expect the family with 2 young kids to pay for anything for me, even if it is related to their kids.
I might feel differently if we had our own kids or money was tight, though.
